UC San Diego life science researchers Don Cleveland and Joanne Chory were awarded 2018 Breakthrough Prize awards in December. Each winner receives $3,000,000, which makes the Breakthrough Prize among science’s largest award. The Breakthrough Prize is intended to highlight scientists who are tackling the biggest questions and toughest challenges in order to improve lives.

Dr. Chory, a plant biologist at Salk Institute and an adjunct professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego received her honors “for discovering how plants optimize their growth, development, and cellular structure to transform sunlight into chemical energy.”

According to the National Science Foundation, The University of Michigan (UM) has ranked number one in total research spending among public universities in the United States for the past seven years. Just as impressive, the $1.48 billion spent in 2016/2017 represents a 6.4% increase over the previous finical year. Much of the university's funding came from federal grants.

With trauma patients just a few minutes delay in treatment can make the difference between life and death. However South Chicago has been without a trauma center since 1991. This means trauma patients have to be transported nearly 10 miles away to receive the specialized services they need. The $270 million makeover happening at the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus seeks to resolve that issue. The new $39 million adult emergency department that opened at U Chicago Medicine in December will become an integrated trauma care facility within the next few months.

Of the four main types of Leukemia, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) diagnoses make up nearly one-third of new leukemia cases and is most likely to occur in adults. Although common cancer treatment methods are used for AML patients, only about half go into remission after chemotherapy treatments. Factors such as age and overall health contribute to these remission rates. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) there are over 380,000 people living with leukemia in the United States. Each year roughly 24,500 people die from the disease and over 62,000 new cases are diagnosed. To improve treatment options for leukemia patients, the NCI recently awarded John DiPersio, MD, PhD of Washington University, St. Louis $6 million in research funding. The Professor of Medicine in Oncology at the university’s School of Medicine will use the seven years of funding to support three major areas of leukemia research in his lab. These include: improving the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy, preventing graft-versus-host disease, and developing new immunotherapies.

Life science product vendors flock to these events, so they can meet with the nations top funded researchers, and educate them about the products they have to offer. Typically researchers are surveyed about the products they are most interested in as they enter the event. This year we are sharing some of those results so we can better meet the needs of the researchers attending, and also help laboratory supply companies, better target their markets.
