UChicago's $270 Million Makeover Includes New ER with Level I Trauma Center

Posted by Rebecca Inch-Partridge on Mon, Jan 08, 2018

With trauma patients just a few minutes delay in treatment can make the difference between life and death. However South Chicago has been without a trauma center since 1991. This means trauma patients have to be transported nearly 10 miles away to receive the specialized services they need. The $270 million makeover happening at the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus seeks to resolve that issue. The new $39 million adult emergency department that opened at U Chicago Medicine in December will become an integrated trauma care facility within the next few months.

UCSD Scientists Receive $8M to Research Leukemia Treatments

Posted by Laura Braden on Tue, Jan 02, 2018

Leukemia cells

Of the four main types of Leukemia, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) diagnoses make up nearly one-third of new leukemia cases and is most likely to occur in adults. Although common cancer treatment methods are used for AML patients, only about half go into remission after chemotherapy treatments. Factors such as age and overall health contribute to these remission rates. Researchers at top life science institutions around the world continually study AML to gain better understandings of the biology of this cancer that can lead to new and more effect treatment methods. Research News: Michigan State Saving the Bees from Pesticides

Posted by Rebecca Inch-Partridge on Mon, Dec 18, 2017

Without pesticides farmers would become nearly impossible to feeding earth’s 7.6 billion inhabitants. One third of our global food supply is pollinated by bees. Researchers at Michigan State University’s entomology department may have found molecular tweaks that can allow Pyrethroid pesticides to kill pests without killing bees.

Texas Researchers Receive $5.7M to Further Cancer Research

Posted by Laura Braden on Thu, Dec 14, 2017

tamucampus1.jpgThe state of Texas is striving to increase cancer research capabilities and opportunities with the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). One method that CPRIT uses to increase cancer research opportunities throughout the state is through the institutes core facility support awards, which provide more funding and opportunities for researchers from different Texas institutions. Recently, researchers from Texas A&M University received a $5.7 million grant from CPRIT to expand cancer research at the university through this additional core facility funding. Washington University, St. Louis: $6 Million in Leukemia Research Funding

Posted by Rebecca Inch-Partridge on Thu, Dec 07, 2017

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) there are over 380,000 people living with leukemia in the United States. Each year roughly 24,500 people die from the disease and over 62,000 new cases are diagnosed. To improve treatment options for leukemia patients, the NCI recently awarded John DiPersio, MD, PhD of Washington University, St. Louis $6 million in research funding. The Professor of Medicine in Oncology at the university’s School of Medicine will use the seven years of funding to support three major areas of leukemia research in his lab. These include: improving the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy, preventing graft-versus-host disease, and developing new immunotherapies.

What Lab Products are Most in Demand at UCSF Mission Bay?

Posted by BCI Staff on Tue, Dec 05, 2017

Every year, Biotechnology Calendar Inc. holds at least 2 events at the University of California's UCSF Campus, in order to provide researchers with access to the latest research tools in the industry.  Life science product vendors flock to these events, so they can meet with the nations top funded researchers, and educate them about the products they have to offer.  Typically researchers are surveyed about the products they are most interested in as they enter the event. This year we are sharing some of those results so we can better meet the needs of the researchers attending, and also help laboratory supply companies, better target their markets. Of course, like the mutual fund companies say, past results are not necessarily an indication of future performance.
