Texas Researchers Receive $5.7M to Further Cancer Research

 tamucampus1.jpgThe state of Texas is striving to increase cancer research capabilities and opportunities with the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). One method that CPRIT uses to increase cancer research opportunities throughout the state is through the institutes core facility support awards, which provide more funding and opportunities for researchers from different Texas institutions. Recently, researchers from Texas A&M University received a $5.7 million grant from CPRIT to expand cancer research at the university through this additional core facility funding. The Texas Medical Center has recently fostered a $25 million initiative designed to support technologies and early-stage companies and to further the TMC’s mission to advance health, education and research. 

"The Texas Medical Center unveiled plans for the TMC Venture Fund to an audience of more than 600 investors, hospital stakeholders, advisors and members of Houston’s innovation ecosystem" see press release.  For those wondering just how big this is compared to the overall Texas Medical Center research marketplace, current estimates for the size of this market range from $1.8 Billion to  $2.2 Billion.

Texas Medical Center Researchers Closer to Cause of Huntington's

Researchers at Texas Medical Center’s Rice University recently discovered that Huntington’s Disease might be triggered by a repeating nucleotide sequence in the gene for a mutant protein. The research team conducted this study by analyzing proteins that were suspected to misfold and form plaques in the brains of patients with neurological diseases.

Texas A&M Gains Research Funding to Study Post-Traumatic Epilepsy

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is the leading cause of disability among U.S. military personnel and veterans. What’s more, 50% of people with TBI develop spontaneous seizures. If the seizures become recurrent then the condition qualifies as Post-Traumatic Epilepsy, PTE. Now thanks to a 3 year, $750,000 research grant from the Department of Defense and the Army, researchers at Texas A&M will conduct a study on TBI to uncover the molecular and epigenetic mechanism of PTE.

UT Austin Science Researchers Compare Physical and Emotional Pain

If you have ever had a severe headache, you may have noticed how pain takes a toll on your emotional state, especially if you have ever experienced a migraine. Taking pain medication can help with how a headache feels physically, but what effects does pain relief have on people emotionally? Believe it or not, a number of studies have been conducted on how pain medication like ibuprofen can ameliorate emotional pain. Research has proven that ibuprofen can indeed relieve emotional stress, but scientists at the University of Texas, Austin have recently discovered that it is much more effective on women than on men. Men who take the drug say that they experience harsher feelings of rejection, while women report feeling better.

New Research Funding Spotlight: University of Texas, Austin

It has been a good year for University of Texas at Austin researchers in terms of new research funding: At least three studies have received upwards of $650,000 in life science funding from the National Institutes of Health. “Remodeling Potential of the Mitral Valve Following Surgical Repair,” the highest NIH-funded life science study so far this year, received $1.3 million. Additionally, “Training Interventions and Genetics of Exercise Response” and “Novel Molecular and Cellular Approaches for Alcoholism Medication Development” received $684,724 and $664,347 respectively.
