The Parnassus Heights is the oldest and the largest of the University of California, San Francisco campuses. It houses basic science, clinical and translational research programs. It is also home to UCSF’s Colleges of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy as well as its School of Nursing. After successfully developing the 60 acre Mission Bay campus, attention is now being directed toward the 107 acre Parnassus campus where half the buildings are at least 50 years old. The goal is to re-imagine the campus in a way that both fosters advances in the ever changing fields of health sciences and harnesses the power of new, data-driven, technology.

University of California San Francisco recently received a $2,370,047 grant from the National Institutes of Health(NIH). This is the fourth year that funding has been allocated for a $17 million multi-center study to improve long-term survival of kidney transplant recipients.
The goal is to reduce or eliminate inflammation in kidney transplant patients and prevent decline in function. The study involves two clinical trials and simultaneous research by biologists and researchers.

Every year, Biotechnology Calendar Inc. holds at least 2 events at the University of California's UCSF Campus, in order to provide researchers with access to the latest research tools in the industry. Life science product vendors flock to these events, so they can meet with the nations top funded researchers, and educate them about the products they have to offer. Typically researchers are surveyed about the products they are most interested in as they enter the event. This year we are sharing some of those results so we can better meet the needs of the researchers attending, and also help laboratory supply companies, better target their markets. Of course, like the mutual fund companies say, past results are not necessarily an indication of future performance.

Scientists at UC San Francisco recently published the results of their Phase II Clinical Trial, which showed that an antihistamine restores nervous system function in patients with chronic multiple sclerosis (MS). In this landmark study, the antihistamine, clemastine fumarate, is the first medication that has been shown to reliably restore any brain function damaged by a neurological disease in human patients.

In 2003 UCSF opened its first building on the Mission Bay Campus, Genetech Hall. Over the last fourteen years, as the campus expanded, it became a biotechnology hub and a place where the future clinical researchers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and dentists learn with the most modern tools available. In 2015 UCSF Medical at Mission Bay became San Francisco’s first new hospital in 30 year. This 289-bed complex is actually made up of three specialty hospitals under one roof: Benioff Children’s Hospital, Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital and Bakar Cancer Hospital. Soon the next phase of expansion at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus will begin with two new science buildings.

The National Science Foundation has awarded $24 million to create the Center for Cellular Construction; a new bioengineering center based at UC San Francisco. The cutting edge interdisciplinary center will transform the field of cell biology by bringing together cell biologists, engineers, physicists, and computer scientists to create machines made out of living cells.

Since HIV/AIDS emerged as a global health problem in the 1980's, researchers have been diligently working to create new treatments and vaccines for the disease. Currently, there is no cure for the disease, and treatments can only suppress it. Because of its severity and broad reach, scientists around the world receive substantial funding each year to study this virus in order to gain a more thorough understanding and better combat it. Now, thanks to an award from the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), researchers at the University of California, San Francisco will be able to study the virus in a new $20 million institute, located on the Mission Bay campus, for the next five years.

San Francisco’s Mission Bay district became a magnificent conglomeration of colors and excitement as celebrities, civic dignitaries, and community members celebrated the upcoming opening of the new UCSF Medical Center with a lights-on festival and a hard hat walk. Adding excitement to the event were Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of the ABC television show “Modern Family,” Olympic champion figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi and San Francisco Giants home run king Barry Bonds, a longtime friend and supporter of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco.

Funding makes laboratory research possible, which makes discovery possible, which leads to advancing knowledge and treatment options. But the primary job of a top scientist and lab director should not be to write grant proposals at the expense of time spent actually doing research. With that insight in mind, the University of California San Francisco put a system in place 5 years ago called the Resource Allocation Program (RAP). The function of the RAP is to streamline the intramural funding process so that faculty only have to fill out one application for many grants, and then only twice a year on set dates. A recent review of the program shows it to be a success, with a 66% increase in overall applications submitted and approximately a 20% increase in funding awarded in the past year alone.
