Texas Medical Center Receives $5.8M in Research Funding for Cancer Bioinformatics

Posted by Rebecca Inch-Partridge on Mon, Sep 24, 2018

In the information age, cancer research is shifting from data generation to bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary field develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. Bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data.  The Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) recently awarded W. Jim Zheng, Ph.D., of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) a five-year, $5.8 million grant to sort through information that could lead to cures for cancer.

$1 Billion Medical Building Under Construction at Boston’s Longwood Medical

Posted by Rebecca Inch-Partridge on Mon, Apr 23, 2018

Longwood Medical Area in Boston is one of the densest medical communities in the country. The 213-acre neighborhood houses four teaching hospitals, a medical school, and a diabetes research center and clinic. Five of those institutions — Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Joslin Diabetes Center are affiliated with Harvard Medical School, which relies on them to train its students. In September 2017, Boston Children’s Hospital began construction of a $1 billion state-of-the-art clinical building.

UCSD Scientists Receive $8M to Research Leukemia Treatments

Posted by Laura Braden on Tue, Jan 02, 2018

Leukemia cells

Of the four main types of Leukemia, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) diagnoses make up nearly one-third of new leukemia cases and is most likely to occur in adults. Although common cancer treatment methods are used for AML patients, only about half go into remission after chemotherapy treatments. Factors such as age and overall health contribute to these remission rates. Researchers at top life science institutions around the world continually study AML to gain better understandings of the biology of this cancer that can lead to new and more effect treatment methods. Washington University, St. Louis: $6 Million in Leukemia Research Funding

Posted by Rebecca Inch-Partridge on Thu, Dec 07, 2017

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) there are over 380,000 people living with leukemia in the United States. Each year roughly 24,500 people die from the disease and over 62,000 new cases are diagnosed. To improve treatment options for leukemia patients, the NCI recently awarded John DiPersio, MD, PhD of Washington University, St. Louis $6 million in research funding. The Professor of Medicine in Oncology at the university’s School of Medicine will use the seven years of funding to support three major areas of leukemia research in his lab. These include: improving the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy, preventing graft-versus-host disease, and developing new immunotherapies.

New Cancer Treatment Breakthrough at U of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Posted by Rebecca Inch-Partridge on Mon, Dec 04, 2017

The National Cancer Institute awards the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign roughly $5 million in research funding each year. This funding supports a number of cancer research projects conducted at the university. One such project is a ground breaking study of nanoparticles that researchers designed to specifically bind to a protein that marks the surface of breast cancer stem cells and destroy them. These elusive and rare cells can cause cancer to come back years after the tumor has been treated.
