Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus and its partner, Colorado Clinical and Transitional Sciences Institute (CCTSI), recently received a new five-year $46.5 million grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH).
“The general public may not know the CCTSI name,” Dr. Sokol, CCTSI director and professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, stated in an article for CU Anschutz Today. “But they have probably benefited from the research that has come out of our institute over the past 10 years.”
Since its inception, Institute staff have conducted research that has led to a cure for hepatitis C; developed treatments for cystic fibrosis; boosted the rates of health screenings in underserved Colorado communities; and developed community-based approaches to teaching CPR.

UC San Diego has received federal support to continue its efforts to develop new treatments and, ultimately, find a cure for HIV/AIDS. A five-year, $15 million grant has been awarded to the university’s Center for AIDS Research by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The grant signals the federal agency’s support of the university’s research efforts that started in 1994, the height of the AIDS epidemic.

University of California San Francisco recently received a $2,370,047 grant from the National Institutes of Health(NIH). This is the fourth year that funding has been allocated for a $17 million multi-center study to improve long-term survival of kidney transplant recipients.
The goal is to reduce or eliminate inflammation in kidney transplant patients and prevent decline in function. The study involves two clinical trials and simultaneous research by biologists and researchers.

When an individual loses touch with reality and sees, hears, or believes things that aren’t real it is referred to as a psychosis. People suffering a psychotic episode often experience the delusion that their actions are being controlled by others, such as the government or aliens. The physiology behind this break with reality remains a mystery. Thanks to a $1.5 million, four-year, grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), scientists at Michigan State University will conduct a study aimed at identifying the brain mechanisms responsible for causing psychosis.

On average, 20 people die each day while waiting for an organ transplant, according to the United Network of Organ Sharing. However, scientists at the University of Minnesota envision a day when organ transplants from donors will no longer be necessary. Instead, failing organs will be replaced with ones created by specialized 3D printers. In a giant step toward that goal, researchers have manufactured lifelike artificial organ models using a custom-built 3D printer. These models mimic the exact anatomical structure, mechanical properties, as well as the look and feel of real organs. This research project is supported by two, five-year NIH grants that total over $2.6 million.

Most people think of paralysis in terms of not being able to move or walk. But there is another side to being paralyzed , the lack of sensation. The inability to feel pain leaves the person susceptible to burns from inadvertent contact with hot surfaces. Researchers at the Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA have developed a new protocol which could serve as the first step toward stem cell-based therapies to restore sensation in paralyzed people who have lost feeling in parts of their body.

Most people don’t think of the flu as being life threatening. However, 36,000 American’s die because of the flu virus each year. Now, with the help of millions in NIH research funding, scientists at Rockefeller University have devised a strategy for improving existing flu vaccines. The new vaccines will better protect people against these ever-mutating viruses. And this new strategy might eliminate the need for annual flu shots, while at the same time saving thousands of lives.

The brain is a fragile organ that can be damaged by different impacts to the head, including sports injuries or car crashes. Thousands of people arediagnosed with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) each year, stemming from different head impacts. The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) awards 16 US institutions a TBI Model System grant each year to provide researchers and clinicians more opportunities to study these injuries.
