According to the NIH, "Genomic medicine is an emerging medical discipline that involves using genomic information about an individual as part of their clinical care (e.g. for diagnostic or therapeutic decision-making) and the health outcomes and policy implications of that clinical use."
In 2018, Duke University was awarded six grants from the National Human Genome Research Institute, a part of the NIH. Two of the grants will total about $9 million over the next 5 years. The first grant establishes the Duke Center for Applied Genomics & Precision Medicine. The second supports a Duke initiative to gather the family medical histories of low-income patients and assess their inherited risk of certain diseases.

The Dolby family is a longtime supporter of UC San Francisco. In 2015, the Ray and Dagmar Dolby Family Fund gifted UCSF’s Department of Psychiatry $20 million to support research on mood disorders and treatment programs. Now Dagmar Dolby and her son David are donating another $20 million to the university to launch the UCSF Dolby Family Center for Mood Disorders. Faculty and clinics under this new center’s umbrella will be housed in either of two state-of-the-art buildings under construction on the Mission Bay Campus: the Child, Teen and Family Center, which will also house the Department of Psychiatry, and the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Neurosciences Building.

The Parnassus Heights is the oldest and the largest of the University of California, San Francisco campuses. It houses basic science, clinical and translational research programs. It is also home to UCSF’s Colleges of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy as well as its School of Nursing. After successfully developing the 60 acre Mission Bay campus, attention is now being directed toward the 107 acre Parnassus campus where half the buildings are at least 50 years old. The goal is to re-imagine the campus in a way that both fosters advances in the ever changing fields of health sciences and harnesses the power of new, data-driven, technology.

University of California San Francisco recently received a $2,370,047 grant from the National Institutes of Health(NIH). This is the fourth year that funding has been allocated for a $17 million multi-center study to improve long-term survival of kidney transplant recipients.
The goal is to reduce or eliminate inflammation in kidney transplant patients and prevent decline in function. The study involves two clinical trials and simultaneous research by biologists and researchers.

Construction is underway on a new $357 million neurosciences building on UC San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus. The 270,000-square-foot, six-story building will house the departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Neurological Surgery all under one roof. Currently, these departments are located on different campuses. The new science building is scheduled to open in 2020.

In April of last year, Joan and Sanford I. Weill and the Weill Family Foundation donated $185 million to establish the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. This was the largest single donation in UC San Francisco’s history. It raised the philanthropic commitments made to UCSF neuroscience programs last year to more than $500 million.

Scientists at UC San Francisco recently published the results of their Phase II Clinical Trial, which showed that an antihistamine restores nervous system function in patients with chronic multiple sclerosis (MS). In this landmark study, the antihistamine, clemastine fumarate, is the first medication that has been shown to reliably restore any brain function damaged by a neurological disease in human patients.

In 2003 UCSF opened its first building on the Mission Bay Campus, Genetech Hall. Over the last fourteen years, as the campus expanded, it became a biotechnology hub and a place where the future clinical researchers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and dentists learn with the most modern tools available. In 2015 UCSF Medical at Mission Bay became San Francisco’s first new hospital in 30 year. This 289-bed complex is actually made up of three specialty hospitals under one roof: Benioff Children’s Hospital, Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital and Bakar Cancer Hospital. Soon the next phase of expansion at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus will begin with two new science buildings.

For the sixth year in a row, UC San Francisco was the top public recipient of biomedical research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Overall, UCSF researchers were awarded $577.6 million in NIH grants and contracts in 2016. This was a 3 percent increase over 2015, which is consistent with UCSF’s average annual increase over the past five years.

Each year, Duke's Department of Medicine receives more than $130 million in federal research grants to fund basic, clinical, and transnational research. For the fiscal year 2015-2016 Duke University also received over $180 in private donations from individuals and various foundations to support their lifesaving research. An example of their success is a recent study conducted by Duke University researchers that may save patients with atrial fibrillation (A-fib) from suffering from strokes.
