The University of California at San Francisco has received, for the 12th consecutive year, the most funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) of all public research universities in the United States.

A unique opportunity to advance research into the function of the human brain has been presented to three UCLA neuroscientists. Michele Basso, Dr. Peyman Golshani and Daniel Aharoni have received a $3.7 million, three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop imaging technology to record tens of thousands of neurons with the intent of learning how disease impacts the brain’s function.

According to the NIH, "Genomic medicine is an emerging medical discipline that involves using genomic information about an individual as part of their clinical care (e.g. for diagnostic or therapeutic decision-making) and the health outcomes and policy implications of that clinical use."
In 2018, Duke University was awarded six grants from the National Human Genome Research Institute, a part of the NIH. Two of the grants will total about $9 million over the next 5 years. The first grant establishes the Duke Center for Applied Genomics & Precision Medicine. The second supports a Duke initiative to gather the family medical histories of low-income patients and assess their inherited risk of certain diseases.

Nearly one million American’s live with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The direct and indirect costs of Parkinson’s, including treatment, social security payments and lost income, total nearly $25 billion per year in the United States. Medications alone average $2,500 per year per patient. Currently, there is no definitive test for PD and, while there are treatments, there is no cure. With the help of over $7.7 million in NIH funding, the Director of the Morris K. Udall Parkinson’s Disease Research Center at Johns Hopkins, Ted Dawson M.D., Ph.D. hopes to change that.

Half of all sexually active young people will acquire a sexually transmitted disease by the age of 25. According to the Center for Disease Ccontrol (CDC) there are 20 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections (STI) each year. There are more than 110 million Americans currently living with a STI. The direct medical cost to the U.S. healthcare system from these infections is nearly $16 billion every year. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University recently received a $5.1 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to develop a faster and more accurate diagnostic tool for STIs. This device could radically change how sexually transmitted infections are tested and treated.

University of California, Riverside Professor of Biomedical Sciences Maurizio Pellecchia has received two grants, totaling nearly $2.5 million, to continue research on developing drugs to fight cancer, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The Parnassus Heights is the oldest and the largest of the University of California, San Francisco campuses. It houses basic science, clinical and translational research programs. It is also home to UCSF’s Colleges of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy as well as its School of Nursing. After successfully developing the 60 acre Mission Bay campus, attention is now being directed toward the 107 acre Parnassus campus where half the buildings are at least 50 years old. The goal is to re-imagine the campus in a way that both fosters advances in the ever changing fields of health sciences and harnesses the power of new, data-driven, technology.

Two UCLA research programs have earned state and federal grants totaling $18.8 million, while two departments have been given $3.35 million in private endowments, according to university news reports. The Urology Department received $9.3 million from the state of California while the Fielding School of Public Health earned a $9.5 million grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Research into how young children with autism integrate auditory and visual information to learn the meaning of words started this summer at Michigan State University (MSU). The three-year project is funded through a $300,000 Early Career Research Award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), a branch of the National Institute of Health (NIH).
