UMass Amherst Investigates Breast Cancer Treatments

The University of Massachusetts is investigating better ways to improve risk assessments and take more effective preventative measures for breast cancer. These projects are funded by the NIH and have already been supported with more than $13.5 million. Researchers in the fields of chemical engineering, biology, veterinary and animal science, public health, health sciences, and epidemiology are all part of the effort.

New Research, Forensics Facility at University of South Florida

Celebrations were held in September for two new facilities on the St. Petersburg campus of the University of South Florida. Grand opening festivities were held for a new seven-story, 225,000-square-foot Research and Education Building.  In the same month, groundbreaking ceremonies marked construction of the K9 Tactical Center/Florida’s Forensic Institute for Research, Security and Tactics (F.I.R.S.T.).

Five University of South Florida Faculty Honored for Inventions

Five University of South Florida (USF) Professors received 2018 Excellence in Innovation Awards from the university’s chapter of the National Academy of Inventors in September. USF Research News states that the faculty were recognized for inventing and patenting new technology, creating startup companies and securing research grants and outside investment funding as well as supporting student innovators in research projects.

University of South Florida Opens Department of Medical Engineering

The University of South Florida announced the creation of a Department of Medical Engineering. This trans-disciplinary department consists of physicians and engineers specializing in chemical and mechanical engineering, biomedicine and nanotechnology. It was established through the collaborative efforts of USF’s College of Engineering and USF’s Health Morsani College of Medicine. The goal is to combine related aspects of engineering and medicine while providing access to real-world health care environments for education and research.

MSU Opens New $69.8 Million Bioengineering Research Facility

Michigan State University has recently opened a new 130,000-square-foot Bio Engineering Facility on its East Lansing campus. The $69.8 million research building will bring together researchers from a wide range of disciplines to collaborate on cutting-edge biomedical research projects, with a shared mission to improve human health and save lives around the world.

$8M Research Grant Awarded to UAB, Duke, & UW Collaborative Study

The $8M grant, given by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, will support a project in which the research team will use bioengineered stem cells and tissue to create a functional heart patch. The patch will restore function and prevent heart failure that can be caused by a heart attack's damage.
