According to John Hopkins Medicine, 50 to 80 percent of U.S. adults have the oral herpes virus and many don’t know it. Most commonly associated with “cold sores” or “fever blister” the herpes virus can cause other, more serious symptoms as well. These include severe flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes and headaches. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded Afsar Naqvi, assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago’s College of Dentistry, a five year, $2 million grant to study this wide spread and yet often misdiagnosed disease.

Oregon State University recently acquired a new, customized $1.6 million ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy system (AP-XPS). The AP-XPS is the first instrument of its kind in the United States to incorporate an ambient-pressure scanning tunneling microscope, or AP-STM, which enables imaging of surfaces with atomic resolution. This high-tech research instrument will make the surface characterization laboratory at OSU’s College of Engineering a major resource for scientists throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The University of Illinois at Chicago received a two-year, $475,000 grant to study a new treatment for type 1 diabetes that might help protect the pancreas. This promising new treatment would involve using two protein molecules to reduce the damage caused by the body’s autoimmune response. The research led by Dr. Bellur S. Prabhaker, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at UIC, could eventually free many diabetes patients from the rigors of daily insulin injections.

Microcephaly has been linked to the Zika virus

With Zika outbreaks in Mexico, Central America, and South America, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is attempting to stop the virus at our border. To assist with this effort, the institute is funding a study led by Dr. William Britt, Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). This study will take place in Brazil, where the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 500,000 and 1.5 million people have been infected by Zika. The study will follow pregnant women in Brazil regardless of their Zika virus infection status and follow the infants suspected of having Zika from birth until 2 years of age.

According to the Optogenetics Resource Center at Stanford University, optogenetics involves using genetics and light to control events within specific cells, in this case – brain tissue. Until recently, technology available for optogenetics has been comparable bulky and unwieldy, a problem which the Stanford researchers had hoped to address.

Scientists at UC Irvine have created a new method to quickly and accurately track the progression of Huntington’s disease. Irvine researchers studied Huntington’s proteins present in spinal fluid to determine that they held a “seeding” property, which is essential to the disease’s progression.
