Two researchers in UC San Diego’s Division of Biological Sciences were selected as Pew biomedical scholars for 2017. Microbiologist, Rachel Dutton Ph.D. and physicist, Elizabeth Villa, Ph.D. were each awarded flexible funding that may be used at their discretion for personnel, lab equipment, supplies, or travel directly related to their research. Dutton and Villa were selected this as part of this year’s group of 22 exceptional early-career researchers who will receive support for their foundational research.

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) awarded two scientists at UC San Diego $2 million each for their innovative research. The first award went to Alysson R. Muotri, PhD, professor in the UC San Diego School of Medicine departments of Pediatrics and Cellular and Molecular Medicine. The funding will support studies of new treatments for Zika. The second award went to Dan Kaufman, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in the Division of Regenerative Medicine. This funding will support the creation an “off-the-shelf immunotherapy” using NK cells to treat refractory or resistant tumors, such as ovarian cancer.

Despite recent advances in neuroimaging, the medical community still lacks a comprehensive map of the brain and how it changes with age. Such maps would make it possible for doctors to distinguish between what is normal aging and what is atypical, which would make it possible to link atypical changes to neurological diseases and various mental health issues. Thanks to a $34 million NIH grant, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis will lead a project to make such maps of the brain a reality.

UC Davis Medical Center researchers have recently been awarded several grants to investigate promising treatments for Angleman Syndrome. Dr. David Segal, professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, has received over $1.2 million from the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (FAST) to develop a potential treatment. Joe Anderson, PhD, assistant adjunct professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, received $500,000 from the same organization to pursue a different approach to developing a treatment for the genetic disorder. The university also received a $1.1 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) in July, which brings the total for Angelman Syndrome grant funding to nearly $3 million. This puts UC Davis at the forefront of research into the disorder.

Patients with a condition known as lung nodules may soon be breathing a bit more easily, thanks to research funding granted to the University of California, Davis and a new diagnostic technology tested in a 2016 study at the Morehouse School of Medicine and Emory University. Lung nodules are usually benign, small lesions often found in CT chest scans. While only 2% of these nodules end up being cancerous, they still require examination and monitoring to ensure the safety of the patient.

UC Davis Professor Kit Lam has been awarded two separate federal grants to further his cancer research. The first grant is from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. This 4-year, $2 million grant will fund research on the use of targeted nanotheraputics against oral cancer. The second grant is from the National Cancer Institute. This 3-year, $1.2 million research grant will be used to explore new technology for functional imaging in living cells.

Finding matching donors for patients who need bone marrow transplants can be challenging. For ethnic minorities the chances of finding an unrelated donor who is a match through the national donor registry is less than 35 percent. However, thanks to a three year, $600,000 grant from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society researchers and physicians at the University of Arizona-Tucson are hoping to improve the odds of survival for those patients. This new research funding will be used to support ongoing biomedical research at the UA Steele Children’s Research Center into improving haploidentical bone marrow transplantations (haplo-BMT) as well as launching clinical trials at the UA Cancer Center.
