UCSD Scientists Receive 4 Years of Research Funding from Pew

Two researchers in UC San Diego’s Division of Biological Sciences were selected as Pew biomedical scholars for 2017. Microbiologist, Rachel Dutton Ph.D. and physicist, Elizabeth Villa, Ph.D. were each awarded flexible funding that may be used at their discretion for personnel, lab equipment, supplies, or travel directly related to their research. Dutton and Villa were selected this as part of this year’s group of 22 exceptional early-career researchers who will receive support for their foundational research.

UCSD: 5 Teams Get Research Funding for Test Prototypes

August 24Five UC San Diego research teams will be able to bring their innovation one step closer to marketing thanks to the Institute for the Global Entrepreneur (IGE). Each team received up to $50,000 in new research funding so they can field test their prototypes. By being selected to join the IGE’s new technology accelerator program the teams will also receive $25,000 in expert consolations and facility access to the Nano3 clean-room labs as well as the world class Prototyping Facility at the UC San Diego’s Qualcomm Institute.  Four of the five projects cover advances in medical device and diagnostic technologies. The fifth works with Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology for use in autonomous-vehicle navigation.

UC San Diego Receives Two, $2M Research Grants from CIRM

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) awarded two scientists at UC San Diego $2 million each for their innovative research. The first award went to Alysson R. Muotri, PhD, professor in the UC San Diego School of Medicine departments of Pediatrics and Cellular and Molecular Medicine. The funding will support studies of new treatments for Zika. The second award went to Dan Kaufman, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in the Division of Regenerative Medicine. This funding will support the creation an “off-the-shelf immunotherapy” using NK cells to treat refractory or resistant tumors, such as ovarian cancer.

UCSD Researchers Receive $5M to Study Type 1 Diabetes

UCSD Professor Receives $1.5 Million Research Grant

Dr. Gürol Süel, a Molecular Biology professor at the University of California San Diego, has been named a HHMI-Simons Faculty Scholar by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Simons Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This prestigious distinction includes a $1.5 million award to support Süel's research study on how bacterial cells use electrical signals to communicate with each other.

From the shuffling gait, hunched posture, and tremors to the declining cognitive functions, nearly every aspect of the activities of daily living are impacted. But perhaps the the largest challenge is receiving an accurate diagnosis in the first place.

UCSD Receives $30M from NIH for 4D Nucleome Research
