UC Davis Inhales $2.3M in Grants for Pulmonary Bioresearch

Patients with a condition known as lung nodules may soon be breathing a bit more easily, thanks to research funding granted to the University of California, Davis  and a new diagnostic technology tested in a 2016 study at the Morehouse School of Medicine and Emory University. Lung nodules are usually benign, small lesions often found in CT chest scans. While only 2% of these nodules end up being cancerous, they still require examination and monitoring to ensure the safety of the patient.

Minnesota Research Shows Potency of Kava Against Lung Cancer

Study Shows Chemopreventative Potential of Kava-Derived Compound

Sometimes, the most simple and elegant solution to a problem has already been known for centuries. University of Minnesota researchers have explored the medicinal capacity of an ancient plant - Piper methysticum, commonly known as kava. However, concerns about kava being toxic to the liver have resulted in diminished use. Now, a recently published study has found that a specific kava derivative may have potential to combat cancer without causing any damage to liver cells.

Just this year, researchers from the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia have discovered that the gene Nitrilase 1 (Nit1) plays a large role in the proliferation of cancer cells.
