Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently made an important contribution to life science research with a study published in the September 13th, 2013 issue of the journal Science. Scientists have known for some time that there are sensors on the outside of cells that act as motion detectors for bacteria that may be dangerous. The researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found a sensor pathway inside of cells that that triggers a response by the immune system. According to the study, the interior sensors can work with the exterior sensors to detect a molecule called lipopolysaccharide, or LPS.

Researchers at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta will soon be testing a vaccine that could protect patients against a strain of bird flu, H7N9 influenza, which caused a illness and death in China last spring. The clinical trial will be sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the NIH.

Researchers at Duke University recently made a groundbreaking contribution to the life sciences research field: The Duke researchers found that using certain bone grafting material for spinal fusion only sometimes increases the risk for benign tumors, and it does not increase the risk for cancer. Benign tumors were more common in patients who received the bone promoter recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2, also known as BMP.

Iron is the most common chemical element found on earth, and it plays a key role in the biochemical processes of almost all organisms. Though iron is an important building block of life, it is also attributed to causing cellular damage when it is released into its free catalytic form. Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently published a report in the Journal of Clinical Investigation which sought to help understand the relationship between the protein ferritin and kidney damage caused by this free iron. This study set a foundation for future research into potential treatments to prevent acute kidney injury.

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, led by Donald Buchsbaum, PhD, received a $2.2 million grant from the NIH this year to study pancreatic cancer. According to the University of Alabama website, Dr. Buchsbaum is quoted as saying of his research goals: "My interests are focused on the use of monoclonal antibodies that bind to the tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) receptors for cancer therapy in combination with chemotherapy agents and radiation.” Dr. Buchsbaum and his research team began receiving funding for their studies of pancreatic cancer six years ago, though funding was limited at that time. Officials from Duke University Hospital discussed upcoming renovation plans for Duke North at a meeting this month. The Duke University Health System has already opened the doors to its completed Medicine Pavilion. Now, Duke’s 30-year-old hospital will undergo renovations. Improvements will focus on a 16-bed cardiac critical care unit and 11 operating rooms. According to The Herald-Sun, officials expect the renovations to be completed by August 2015. Approximately $48.4 million will be spent on the project.

Researchers at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will both receive grant money to continue their breast cancer research. Ten programs at the two schools will receive $3.6 million from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the money will be used to study the causes of breast cancer and work towards developing vaccines.

Science researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently received a $3 million grant that will be distributed over five years to join the Women’s Interagency HIV study (WIHS). Michael Saag, M.D. is the study’s principal investigator, and Mirjam-Collete Kempf, Ph.D., M.P.H. is the co-principal investigator. The researchers will begin recruiting women for the study this coming October.
