Four start-up medical companies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently received $80,000 in life science funding the form of a federal grant. The donating organization, Carolina KickStart, is a program within the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NC TraCS). NC TraCS is funded by the NIH and works as a medical research center that awards grant money.

In an article on our Science Market Update blog last week, we featured some life science funding news stories that we covered in our Life Science Company and Industry News Briefs blog the week before. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently made an important contribution to life science research with a study published in the September 13th, 2013 issue of the journal Science. Scientists have known for some time that there are sensors on the outside of cells that act as motion detectors for bacteria that may be dangerous. The researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found a sensor pathway inside of cells that that triggers a response by the immune system. According to the study, the interior sensors can work with the exterior sensors to detect a molecule called lipopolysaccharide, or LPS.

A great deal of new biotech funding in North Carolina is calling national attention to the state's status as a life science research hub. Lab suppliers marketing life science solutions and university lab products will find high quality biotech sales leads at life science marketing events in North Carolina, given the state’s wealth of research funding available. The Republic recently reported that David Murdock, leader of Dole Food Company, Inc., is creating a permanent fund for a center known as the North Carolina Research Campus. The $50 million gift will be used for the campus’s health, agriculture and food research projects.

The U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill number one in primary care for the first time, according to The Daily Tar Heel. The prestigious distinction signals the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s commitment to quality care when it comes to North Carolina patients. Since the ranking incorporates the opinions of the school’s peers, it’s evident that a number of schools across the United States recognize UNC-Chapel Hill’s strength in medicine. The university's medical school, which enrolls 782 students, was also ranked second in family medicine, fifth in rural medicine, ninth in AIDS research and treatment and 22nd in general research.

North Carolina appears to have a rich life science sales market when taking into account recent life science funding statistics. North Carolina Biotechnology Center in particular gave $2.9 million in loans and grants to life science companies and researchers during this second fiscal quarter. North Carolina Biotechnology Center has been funding life science researchers and startups since 1984, helping to make North Carolina the third largest biotechnology cluster in the United States. Ten different programs received awards based on entrepreneurship, technology and education. North Carolina now hosts over 500 life science companies and 58,000 employees who earn an average salary greater than $78,000.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently began construction on a new facility that will be used for research on brain injuries, according to Vice President for Facilities Planning and Development Ray Lafrenaye and a Chapelboro.com news article. The facility will be named the Comprehensive Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center and is being constructed in the former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Border’s bookstore building on Fordham Boulevard. The center is planning on opening for operations in the next few months.

Research scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have discovered a “spray-on skin” treatment that speeds up recovery in wounds that don’t heal well on their own. The findings, published in the Lancet, showed that ulcers treated with the spray healed better than ulcers treated in other ways. According to WRAL.com, between one and two million Americans have a vein disease where leg wounds have difficulty healing. People with such wounds are at risk for infections and even amputation.
