The University of Pittsburgh has opened a brand new, technologically advanced surgical center that will make use of recent discoveries in robotics and machine learning. The Collaborative Research Education and Technology Enhancement in Surgery Initiative (CREATES) aims to support Pittsburgh’s expanding hub of life science innovation, research and development. The $3-million dollar, 10,000 square foot project will bring scientists from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center together with researchers from Carnegie Mellon, and is looking to establish up to six partnerships with US-based robotic firms.

Researchers from science institutions around the world study different forms of cancer, to gain better understandings of the diseases to assist with the development of new treatment methods. One of these cancers that is continuously being studied is ovarian cancer, which effects 1 in 75 women, according to the American Cancer Society. The University of Pittsburgh plans to further enhance ovarian cancer research opportunities with the establishment of a new research center dedicated to ovarian cancer and biology research. So far in 2017 the National Institute on Health has awarded the University of Pittsburgh over $113M in research project grants. This funding supports 296 separate projects. The top six grants were awarded to the university’s School of Medicine.

The University of Pittsburgh has strong ties with the Pittsburgh Veteran's Administration Medical Center located next door, and in the past few years those relations have been strengthened with the establishment of the UP School of Medicine Center for Military Medicine Research as well as a new research facility at the VA's University Drive campus.

A new strategy for combating the neurologically destructive effects of Parkinson's Disease has been developed jointly by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Researchers at University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health report that they have associated exposure to air pollution from pregnancy through age 2 to an increased risk of childhood autism.

Over 31 million Americans currently suffering from back pain can rest easy knowing that Pitt researchers are shouldering a new effort to study the condition - thanks to grants from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
According to a university press release, the University of Pittsburgh will lead a 5-year, $14 million clinical trial to study intervention and early treatment options for back pain.
