Duke: Researchers find how Natural Killer Cells Regulate Protective HIV Antibodies

Duke received a $28 Million grant from the NIH to discover immunologic research directed at tackling major scientific problems that hinder the development of an effective HIV-1 vaccine. The vaccine strategy will be based on identifying and targeting novel HIV-1 vulnerabilities to B, T and NK cell immune responses and then using this information to design vaccines that will induce protective immunity at the time and location of HIV-1 transmission.

UCLA Receives Multi-million Grants and Gifts from Donors

Two UCLA research programs have earned state and federal grants totaling $18.8 million, while two departments have been given $3.35 million in private endowments, according to university news reports. The Urology Department received $9.3 million from the state of California while the Fielding School of Public Health earned a $9.5 million grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA).

USC Researchers Use Proteins to Boost Immune System in Fighting HIV

Although there is not yet a cure for HIV, some treatments are able to slow the spread of the virus. Researchers around the world study the virus with the hope of one day creating a cure to attack the virus. A team of researchers from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles are taking a different approach to fighting HIV - by creating a treatment that boosts the immune system instead of attacking the virus.

$23.5M Granted to Fred Hutch Researchers to Defeat HIV

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Cener in Seattle, WA. DefeatHIV, an initiative based out of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA, has been researching potential cures for HIV over the past 5 years. Their research has focused on the use of blood cells genetically modified to be resistant to the HIV virus. It was recently announced that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded the DefeatHIV team a new grant of $23.5 million that will continue to support their research on this potential cure for an additional 5 years.
