On April 20th UCLA celebrated the grand reopening of the Jules Stein Building after a $65M renovation. This building connects to the Doris Stein Building and the Edie & Lew Wasserman Building to make up the UCLA Stein Eye Institute. Combined, the three buildings provide nearly 300,000 square feet of functional space with over 20 specially equipped laboratories to support vision science investigations.

August 24Five UC San Diego research teams will be able to bring their innovation one step closer to marketing thanks to the Institute for the Global Entrepreneur (IGE). Each team received up to $50,000 in new research funding so they can field test their prototypes. By being selected to join the IGE’s new technology accelerator program the teams will also receive $25,000 in expert consolations and facility access to the Nano3 clean-room labs as well as the world class Prototyping Facility at the UC San Diego’s Qualcomm Institute. Four of the five projects cover advances in medical device and diagnostic technologies. The fifth works with Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology for use in autonomous-vehicle navigation.

We live in the information age. Many jobs now require the ability to learn large amounts of information and apply that to novel tasks. In the military this ability is critical. However, mastering a new task, skill or information often takes the right environment, mindset, and sharp focus. It also can require a lot of repetition and time. In some situations, that’s a luxury the military can’t afford. Therefore, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently approved $9.85 million in new research funding to develop a system that will help military personnel quickly master new skills and digest vast quantities of information.

For the sixth year in a row, UC San Francisco was the top public recipient of biomedical research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Overall, UCSF researchers were awarded $577.6 million in NIH grants and contracts in 2016. This was a 3 percent increase over 2015, which is consistent with UCSF’s average annual increase over the past five years.

So far in 2017 the National Institute on Health has awarded the University of Pittsburgh over $113M in research project grants. This funding supports 296 separate projects. The top six grants were awarded to the university’s School of Medicine.

In 1998 Mattel’s gift of $25 million made the construction of the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital possible. In March 2017 Mattel made a $50M commitment to the UCLA Foundation to expand the hospital’s pediatric services. Over the last 20 years, Mattel has provided more than $80 million to UCLA’s health care system to support its Children’s Hospital.

Each year, Duke's Department of Medicine receives more than $130 million in federal research grants to fund basic, clinical, and transnational research. For the fiscal year 2015-2016 Duke University also received over $180 in private donations from individuals and various foundations to support their lifesaving research. An example of their success is a recent study conducted by Duke University researchers that may save patients with atrial fibrillation (A-fib) from suffering from strokes.

For the 2016 fiscal year budget, and Congress increased government funding on research for Alzheimer's by $350 million. That was a 50% increase over the previous year. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that the National Institutes of Health would need $2 billion a year to maximize the chances of curing or preventing the disease by 2025. This year’s increase puts the NIH on track to reach that goal. Alzheimer's Disease is the most common form of dementia and this increased science research funding it is already beginning to pay off.

When it comes to research the University of Minnesota has a lot going for it. Their 4,000 faculty include members of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine, as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. U of M ranks 8th among public universities in research spending, with more than $870 million spent annually. In 2016, over $243M of that research funding was awarded by the National Institute of Health.

Dr. Robert Darnell, Professor of Cancer Biology and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Neuro-Oncology at Rockefeller University, received a $1.1 million grant from the NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
This research funding will support his lab’s new approach to studying diseases of the brain through modern biotech services and more efficient informatics. He and his lab will work on harnessing the power of molecular biology to define therapeutic targets for several different types of brain diseases. Researchers will do this by combining the latest technological advances modern science has brought to neuroscience with new computational approaches.
