Alzheimer’s Research Market on the Rise at UCSB and Worldwide

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Mon, Dec 09, 2013

Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara have discovered the age and origin of an E280A gene mutation that has caused early-onset Alzheimer’s in a Columbian family. The family, whose members have had Alzheimer’s with more frequency than most families, was traced to a single founder dating from the 1500’s. The research team sequenced the genomes of more than 100 family members and identified the regions of common ancestry. They then used this information to trace the source of the Alzheimer’s mutation.

WUSTL Bioresearchers Link Internal Clocks to Alzheimer's

Posted by Sam Asher on Thu, Dec 05, 2013

Determining the causes behind Alzheimer’s disease is a difficult task. Symptoms appear seemingly without provocation, and scientists have been so far unable to pinpoint a clear reason for their onset. Now bioresearchers at Washington University at St. Louis have found a possible explanation, in the form of a gene that regulates our internal clock.

Glaucoma Treatment Market Grows Within Texas Medical Center and U.S.

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Wed, Dec 04, 2013

The traditional glaucoma treatment market for Americans suffering from glaucoma has been limited in the past, but Texas Medical Center doctors now have access to a new, minimally invasive treatment available only at the Houston Methodist Hospital. Glaucoma causes increased fluid pressure on the eye and cause blindness if it goes untreated. Traditional treatments include eye drops and surgery, which entails cutting a small hole in the eye to drain the fluid. (Texas Medical Center)

UCLA Researchers Develop Cytometry Process to Diagnose Cancer

Posted by Dylan Fitzwater on Wed, Nov 27, 2013

UCLA researchers have developed an innovative approach to diagnosing cancer. This research has excellent commercial applications and is already in the process of being translated into a novel technology by a Los Angeles start up. The new technique allows researchers to very accurately diagnose cancers by observing the physical characteristics of cells in bodily fluids.

Urbana-Champaign Bioresearchers Invent Green Supercapacitor

Posted by Sam Asher on Thu, Nov 21, 2013

Often the development of new green technology can seem like a fruitless struggle. This is especially true when a green solution is less powerful and more expensive than its “dirty,” fossil fuel-based counterpart. That’s why it’s so exciting when bioresearchers from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign develop a new supercapacitor that actually matches the potency of today’s leading supercapacitors at a significantly lower financial and environmental expense.
