When we jump into the swimming pool for some last-minute summer revelry, the worst part of getting out is the feeling of residual chlorine on our bodies. The environment doesn’t respond well to chlorine either- several synthetic chlorine-based compounds are toxic when released into nature and have taken part in the development of numerous superfund sites. Fortunately, a team from the University of Minnesota’s BioTechnology Institute is working on a way to clean up this chlorine, with help from some hungry bacteria.

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, led by Donald Buchsbaum, PhD, received a $2.2 million grant from the NIH this year to study pancreatic cancer. According to the University of Alabama website, Dr. Buchsbaum is quoted as saying of his research goals: "My interests are focused on the use of monoclonal antibodies that bind to the tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) receptors for cancer therapy in combination with chemotherapy agents and radiation.” Dr. Buchsbaum and his research team began receiving funding for their studies of pancreatic cancer six years ago, though funding was limited at that time. Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center recently conducted a study examining brains of a number of different ages donated by people who died without signs of neurologic disease. During the course of the investigation, researchers came to the conclusion that a certain hippocampus gene’s function deteriorates in older people. The researchers believe that age-related memory loss is distinct condition from Alzheimer’s or pre-Alzheimer’s, and that the condition may be treatable in the future.

Science researchers at Rockefeller University, Duke University and the University of California, San Francisco recently conducted a study that found that the pain and red skin associated with sunburn is caused by a molecule that’s heavily concentrated in the skin’s epidermis. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The results of this study could lead to a way to prevent sunburn and possibly other sources of pain.

Officials from Duke University Hospital discussed upcoming renovation plans for Duke North at a meeting this month. The Duke University Health System has already opened the doors to its completed Medicine Pavilion. Now, Duke’s 30-year-old hospital will undergo renovations. Improvements will focus on a 16-bed cardiac critical care unit and 11 operating rooms. According to The Herald-Sun, officials expect the renovations to be completed by August 2015. Approximately $48.4 million will be spent on the project.

Clinical trials were recently conducted and proved promising for a Lyme Disease vaccine developed by science researchers at Stony Brook University. The vaccine proved to produce a large number of antibodies against all targeted species of Borrelia, which causes Lyme Disease in Europe and the United States. Baxter International S.A., who worked with Stony Brook University researchers to develop the vaccine, conducted the clinical trials.
