UC Bioresearch Gets Boost with NIH Funding for Biobanking, Translational Science

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Tue, Nov 20, 2012

The University of California system has five biomedical campuses currently: San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Irvine, and Davis/Sacramento. While each campus maintains a certain autonomy, the advantage to being part of a unified, statewide system is especially apparent when it comes to sharing resources such as biospecimens. In research studies that require data from large numbers of human blood or tissue samples, for instance, scientists rely on biobanks: an organized collection of human biological material and associated information stored for one or more research purposes.

Polymer Solar Cell Research Breakthrough at California NanoSystems Institute, UCLA

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Wed, Sep 05, 2012

cell research breakthroughThe big, shiny black solar panels you're used to seeing bolted onto south-facing rooftops may soon be obsolete, if researchers at UCLA's California NanoSystems Institute continue to advance solar nanoscience at their current lightspeed pace. In fact, you not only won't recognize the new technology, you won't even be able to see it -- because it will be virtually transparent. And instead of being mounted to the roof, these thin plastic flexible sheets will cover your windows and skylights, as well as smaller surfaces like the face of your smartphone or tablet. What if the sun's not shining brightly? No problem, because these polymer solar cells (PSCs) absorb mostly ultra-violet and near-infrared (NIR) light, rather than the visible light that more traditional solar technology relies upon.

UCLA Gets New On-Campus Conference and Guest Center

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Thu, Jul 26, 2012

A vital part of academic research is networking, and one of the ways researchers share their work is at professional conferences. Universities and departments sponsor these conferences where groundbreaking papers are given (usually long before publishing) and colleagues from around the world share insights. The University of California Los Angeles has world-class scientists and other thinkers in its ranks, and Los Angeles seems a natural hub for gathering great minds for this important mode of networking. Unfortunately, UCLA has lacked meeting facilities on par with the caliber of its faculty and research labs. That is about to be remedied, thanks to a commitment by the UC Regents and a generous donor pledge to build a new conference center with a 250-bed hotel right on campus and near existing facilities. According to UCLA Chancellor Gene Block:

Fat Stem Cells Turned to Bone Marrow in Breakthrough UCLA Research Study

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Thu, Jun 21, 2012

ucla stem cell researchBone marrow was the first stem cell source to be widely used in clinical transplant surgery to replace damaged bone as a result of injury or chemotherapy. Unfortunately, bone marrow grafts are painful, and the appropriate donor is not always available when the need is there. Now research at the University of California Los Angeles' Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine has demonstrated successfully that stem cells from the patient's own fat (i.e. adipose tissue) can be made usable for bone damage treatment. Bone marrow is, after all, the soft, fatty tissue inside your bones that contains immature cells (aka stem cells) that give rise to all of your blood cells. So looking to fatty tissue from another part of the body to produce mesenchymal cells has made sense all along, though it has taken the efforts of several UCLA teams to show how it can be done in an animal model.

Selling lab products with science, smiles and great graphics

Posted by BCI Staff on Thu, Apr 19, 2012

Are you looking for a little more attention for your lab products?  Strong visual aids and great graphics can dramatically impact the outcome while exhibiting at an event.  The image below is from one of our Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ events, presents a great example of how using strong visuals can draw researchers to an exhibit space.  Notice the eyes on the poster are positioned at approximate eye level to the viewer.  In addition to this, the company builds on the trust theme with the over-head title.  Knowing your audience always helps.  Take a moment to think about  who might stop to look twice at a young child's face... What would make your target audience stop in their tracks?

UCLA Stem Cell Research Restores Vision in Successful Trial Procedure

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Tue, Jan 31, 2012

Stem cell research at the University of California Los Angeles' Jules Stein Eye Institute has led to a limited clinical trial that has produced astounding results for two patients with a form of macular degeneration that had progressed to the point of causing near blindness.  A short time after receiving stem cell injections the two women began to regain vision, enabling them to function independently in ways they couldn't before the procedure.  The story was broadcast on NPR and other media sources with some restraint (it was a small study, with only two patients so far), but obvious excitement (it worked!). On the part of the researchers, the trial procedure held limited expectations for success, in part because the quantity of stem cells they utilized was fairly small.  The results were all the more wondrous for coming as a real surprise, not least of all for the patients themselves.
