Cincinnati Cancer Research Yields New Chemotherapy Delivery Agent

University of Cincinnati cancer researchers made progress by developing a new chemotherapy delivery agent that could significantly reduce the side effects experienced by patients.  Although chemotherapy is one of the most effective ways of treating cancer and has improved the recovery possibilities for many patients, it also causes many of those treated to experience severe side effects.

$10M Prostate Cancer Research Grant to Fund Scientific Dream Team Led by Michigan

There's been a lot of news coming out of Chicago this week from the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Two announcements concerning prostate cancer research are especially worth broadcasting. An Ann Arbor pathologist, Arul M. Chinnaiyan, of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, will be leading a "dream team" of specialists from 5 of the top cancer research institutes in the world in a $10M, 3-year research project titled “Precision Therapy for Advanced Prostate Cancer.” The funding comes from AACR partner, Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), and the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). Heading up the team with Dr. Chinnaiyan is Dr. Charles L. Sawyers of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

UC Davis Cancer Center Gets "Comprehensive" Award for Cancer Research

The UC Davis Cancer Center was recently recognized as a "comprehensive" center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This is the most prestigious honor that a cancer center can receive and designates the renamed, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center as one of the top cancer research institutions in the country.

Georgetown Science Research Breakthrough Keeps Cancer Cells Alive in Lab

Researchers say they may have made a science research breakthrough in the fight against cancer by discovering how to keep tumor cells alive in the lab. Up until recently, scientists haven’t been able to keep cells alive in a way where they look and act like they would in the body. Doctors previously had to freeze or set in wax biopsied tissue to make a diagnosis.

Duke Cancer Center Completion First Stage of Huge Biomedical Revamp

Duke University Medicine is in the midst of a building boom that will transform the medical campus and bring together world-class care, research, and education like never before.  The $235M Cancer Center is scheduled to open on February 27, 2012. The Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) is one of only 40 centers in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute as a “comprehensive cancer center,” combining cutting-edge research with compassionate care.  The other buildings currently under construction are the Duke Medicine Pavilion (mid-2013) and the Learning Center (late 2012) which collectively represent an $880M investment in the Duke Medicine campus.

Smart Move for Fred Hutch Research Center: New Building, + Sky Bridge?

hutch research buildingLast year, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle acquired a newly-constructed 177,000 sf building adjacent to its campus on South Lake Union for $36Million.  The complicated business of moving all of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division (VIDD) labs and faculty from their current building(s) into the new space is scheduled for June of 2012.  While there will be an overall increase in lab square footage, the main advantages of the relocation involve building quality, location, and financial benefits.

UAB Cancer Center Wins $2.3M SPORE Award for Brain Tumor Research

The University of Alabama in Birmingham runs one of an elite group of Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  The NCI's Translational Research Program is in charge of administering SPORE awards, which are focused on specific organ sites.  Now UAB is also a SPORE grantee for its brain tumor program, thanks to a recent $2.3M award over three years to its Cancer Center in conjunction with the UAB Division of Neurosurgery. UAB is one of only four institutions to receive a brain-tumor SPORE grant.

$300M UPMC Center for Innovative Science Building Made Possible by Strong Financial Growth

upmc buildingThe University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) recently released a quarterly financial report that showed solid growth for Western Pennsylvania's largest health care provider and one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the US.  It also announced that it will be begin construction on a $300M facility to house its nascent Center for Innovative Science, which "will bring together leading scientists willing to develop bold, new approaches to understanding complex diseases," according to UPMC's president.  In conjunction with its academic partner, the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC is already recruiting nationally for "a scientific leader in genetics and genomics" to head the center.
