Patients with a condition known as lung nodules may soon be breathing a bit more easily, thanks to research funding granted to the University of California, Davis and a new diagnostic technology tested in a 2016 study at the Morehouse School of Medicine and Emory University. Lung nodules are usually benign, small lesions often found in CT chest scans. While only 2% of these nodules end up being cancerous, they still require examination and monitoring to ensure the safety of the patient.

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lives, making it the second most common cancer for American women. However, breast cancer does not affect all women equally. Past studies have shown that women of African descent with breast cancer die at a higher rate than white women. Researchers at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine have received a grant of $12 million from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study the disparities in breast cancer in women.

Clostridium difficile, more commonly referred to as C. diff, is a bacteria that makes half a million American's sick each year, and is responsible for over 25,000 deaths annually, both directly and indirectly. The bacteria can lead to serious illnesses in the gut, that can cause diarrhea and colon inflammation. Often times, C. diff infections can be caused by the over use of antibiotics, which affect the healthy bacteria in the gut and provide opportunity for C. diff bacteria to grow in that area.
Researchers from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor have received a five-year, $9.2 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to further study C. diff, to learn more about it with the aim of developing new treatment methods. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of leukemia affecting the blood and bone marrow, and has been responsible for 1.8% of cancer deaths in 2016. Because it is so prevalent, many research teams around the world study this disease in search of new treatment methods. One of these research teams, from Harvard University, has joined up with the pharmaceutical company Merck in a $20 million collaboration to develop new therapeutics for leukemia.
