It is well known that infants rely on their mothers for food and nutrients in their early years. However, the effect that the hormones in this food have on an infant's development has not previously been known. Recent research conducted at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Center has shown that hormones in human breast milk contribute to the health of the feeding infant. In 1930 when Doctor Samuel Fosdick Jones retired from his medical practice and teaching at the University of Colorado, the field of bone pathology research was new and emerging. In order to help support this research area, he set up a trust fund that, years after his death, would grant the University of Colorado funding to use in support of this research field. Each year millions of Americans risk undergoing surgery for a variety of problems such as organ transplants, mending broken bones and cosmetic surgeries. Often surgery is necessary to fix ongoing health problems with the benefits of the surgery usually outweighing the risks. Despite the potential risks to surgery patients, in the United States more than 48 million surgeries are performed each year. In most cases, undergoing surgery is relatively risk free, but not always.

The University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical Campus has long been a leader in understanding Multiple Sclerosis (MS) with numerous clinical trials and essential basic research. Now the University plans to create the translational Research Laboratory at the Rocky Mountain MS Center, which will transform its investigation into treatment for the disease that will directly benefit patients.
