In the information age, cancer research is shifting from data generation to bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary field develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. Bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data. The Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) recently awarded W. Jim Zheng, Ph.D., of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) a five-year, $5.8 million grant to sort through information that could lead to cures for cancer.

Ford Motor Co. has agreed to lease the fourth floor of the University of Michigan’s new robotics facility. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the $75-million, 140,000-square-foot, four-story complex, named for the automotive giant, were held in April, according to U-M news reports. The new building will consolidate all the robotics research programs on the Ann Arbor campus.

Richard and Susan Rogal recently committed $150,000,000 to the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. It is the largest gift ever been made to Michigan Medicine. The money will be used to support promising cancer research and help train the next generation of researchers.

People suffering a psychotic episode often experience the delusion that their actions are being controlled by others, such as the government or aliens. The physiology behind this break with reality remains a mystery. Thanks to a $1.5 million, four-year, grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), scientists at Michigan State University will conduct a study aimed at identifying the brain mechanisms responsible for causing psychosis.

The University of Michigan Center for the Discovery of New Medicines (CDNM) has awarded research funding to seven faculty members from across the U-M campus for new drug development projects. The goal of University of Michigan’s CDNM is to accelerate the path toward commercialization for novel and translational approaches to potential therapies. They do this by assisting investigators with financial support as well as providing guidance and expertise. Pilot grants of up to $50,000 are awarded twice per year. They are chosen based on scientific strength, commercial opportunity and unmet medical need.

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is home to a large collection of imaging equipment and facilities, including the Biochemistry Optical Core (BOC). The BOC provides state-of-the-art instrumentation for light and fluorescence based microscopy, including epifluorescence, confocal, and super-resolution imaging. Now UW-Madison is adding another piece of equipment to their state-of-the-art imaging arsenal: a cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) facility.

Most people think of paralysis in terms of not being able to move or walk. But there is another side to being paralyzed , the lack of sensation. The inability to feel pain leaves the person susceptible to burns from inadvertent contact with hot surfaces. Researchers at the Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA have developed a new protocol which could serve as the first step toward stem cell-based therapies to restore sensation in paralyzed people who have lost feeling in parts of their body.
