Rockefeller University: $15M Gift, Lab Construction, and Faculty Prize

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Fri, Mar 09, 2012

Thanks to a $15M charitable gift from the Helmsley Trust, Rockefeller University is establishing a new research center to focus on digestive diseases: the Center for Basic and Translational Research on Disorders of the Digestive System. With research faculty from 20 Rockefeller labs working in the fields of immunology, microbiology, cancer biology, and metabolic disease, the collaborative center will support the training of Ph.D students, postdoctoral researchers, and physician-scientists, as well as provide seed grants for early phase projects and funding for the purchase of equipment.

San Francisco East Bay Life Science Lab Buildings On the Rise, Near Zero Vacancy Rate

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Mon, Mar 05, 2012

The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the largest, most successful established biotech hubs in the US, thanks in part to the presence of 3 of the world's top universities: UCSF, UC Berkeley, and Stanford.  Strong on intellectual capital, the area has been notoriously short of real estate since developers were ordered to stop filling in the Bay back in the 60's.  Fortunately, as manufacturing waned, industrial land became available for redevelopment as high-tech R&D lab space, which is how UCSF's Mission Bay campus eventually came to be.  Across the Bay to the East, bayfront industrial property is seeing a similar repurposing, with particularly mushroom-like life science growth in the little city of Emeryville, though also in neighboring Berkeley and Richmond.

New Science Building and Expansions in the Works at Texas A&M

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Fri, Feb 17, 2012

A new science building and facility expansion are in the works at Texas A&M.  On February 9th, the University System Board of Regents approved a $120 million building and facility expansion for the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in College Station, Texas. The new building will house high-tech laboratories and classrooms that are expected to facilitate learning by offering a superior science research atmosphere.

UCSD Science Lab Building to Open in March at Scripps + 2nd To Follow

Posted by Jaimee Saliba on Mon, Jan 16, 2012

On the UCSD Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) campus, an eco-modern 125,000sf science lab building is nearing completion and will have its grand opening in March 2012.  The Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SFSC) building project is also referred to as the La Jolla Laboratory Replacement Project because the previous building became unstable on the rocky coast several years ago during heavy storms and had to be closed down. The $56M new building project is being managed and financed by the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and will be home to 250-300 researchers. In concert with a second $26M science lab building across the street that just broke ground (read below), SIO is strongly positioned to remain one of the world’s elite marine institutions and a major federal research outpost.

New York Research Campus Destined to be High Tech Science Hub

Posted by BCI Staff on Fri, Dec 23, 2011

Mayor Bloomberg recently outlined formal plans to capitalize on New York research and create a science and technology campus that will mirror what Stanford University is to the Silicon Valley.  Seventeen universities and institutions from around the world submitted proposals for the project.   Contenders included Stanford University, Columbia, and the University of Chicago, but Bloomberg announced on December 18th that Cornell University and Technion-Israel institute of Science and Technology would be partnering to develop the New York research hub.

Life Science Research Facility Space Opens Up at SF Mission Bay Bldg

Posted by BCI Staff on Wed, Sep 28, 2011

When Merck bought Sirna in 2006, the pharmaceutical giant took over Sirna's San Francisco Mission Bay research space at 1700 Owens St. and became the first major life science company to move into the up-and-coming biotech hub.  Except, of course, for biomedical research megastar University of California, San Francisco, which opened the first building of its Mission Bay Campus in 2003 and currently houses its Biochemistry & Biophysics Departments in Genentech Hall, Byers Hall and Rock Hall.  Also on the bayside campus are the William J Rutter Conference Center, Smith Cardiovascular Research Building, UCSF Housing, a child care center, the Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building, the Orthpaedic Institute, and retail shops.  UCSF's real estate holdings at Mission Bay total 57 acres, and the University currently employs over 2000 people at the MB campus alone (before the opening of the future medical center complex and the new Neurosciences Laboratory and Clinical Research Building).
