Mount Sinai School of Medicine recently broke ground on a $125 million new building expansion and modernization project at Mount Sinai Queens. Construction began in October 2013 and is expected to be completed by 2016. The new building at Mount Sinai will house state-of-the-art operating rooms; an expanded emergency department; a multispecialty medical practice that includes primary care, specialty care, and urgent care; diagnostic and laboratory services; and medical offices that conduct on-site outpatient imaging.

The University of Minnesota is partnering with Fairview Health Services to build a new $182.5 million outpatient care center. The new University of Minnesota facility is expected to be complete by early 2016 at the latest. One of the economic benefits of this new partnership is that University of Minnesota faculty physicians will also be able to share directly in the revenue of the center.

Washington University School of Medicine is constructing a new $75 million, 138,000 square-foot research building with a June 2015 target date for completion. The energy-efficient new research building at Washington University will feature state-of-the-art, highly flexible laboratory space where researchers will focus on the most prominent problems in human biology.

The University of Georgia, Athens will receive $44.7 million for the construction of a new UGA building, the Science Learning Center. The 122,500-square-foot facility will add 33 teaching labs to the South campus for the chemistry, biological sciences, plant biology and physics departments.

Researchers at Duke University received a $1.3 million donation this month from Charles and Daneen Stiefel of Raleigh, N.C. The funding will go to support research at Duke Medicine that aims to study several diseases that harmfully affect the immune system and increase the risk of infectious diseases and lymphoma.

After receiving $2 million in philanthropic gifts in honor of Thomas Hartman, the Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research in the Stony Brook University Department of Neurobiology and Behavior was dedicated in a ceremony on June 13th, 2013. Thomas Hartman was a much loved priest, television and radio personality, and believer in many causes who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2004.

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center recently announced that it will be giving $9 million in grants to Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital to update research labs. Harvard Medical School will be receiving $5 million of the money and plans to use the research funding to create a Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology, which will be multidisciplinary in nature and will help to supply better information on clinical trials while drugs are in the process of development. Boston Children's Hospital will use the $4 million it receives from the state to establish the Children’s Center for Cell Therapy, which will include renovating labs to create specialized stem cell culturing facilities.

The Department of Energy recently gave the University of Georgia, Athens a $3 million grant to conduct bioenergy research. The government has pledged $25 million over the next five years to researchers trying to make biofuel more economically efficient. At $3 million, the University of Georgia, Athens is receiving more than any other university.

A gift to Harvard University for $50 million is slated to be announced Monday. The money will be donated by former Harvard student and businessman Len Blavatnik to help fuel a major enterprise intending to bridge the break between basic biomedical research and the creation of new patient therapies. The gift will also kick-start the creation of a fellowship at Harvard Business School to help life science entrepreneurs by expanding their exposure to life science technologies and research.
