Could algae hold the energy answers to our fuel depleted world?

In today's world, energy reserves are being depleted gallon by gallon at an astounding rate. Thanks to the advances of technology and highly funded research we might be able to harness the underutilized power of algae.

  • Half of algae's composition, by weight, is lipid oil
  • Algae yields around 8,000 gallons of biofuel per acre per year as opposed to corn biofuel at 420 gallons
  • Depending on the species, algae can grow in freshwater and saltwater, and in the future could be used to treat wastewater.

Cancer Researchers at U.Texas Find Way to Trigger Cancer Cell Death

It’s not an uncommon dream for cancer researchers and patients afflicted with cancer to find a way to make cancer cells self-destruct: Remarkably, cancer researchers at the University of Texas, Austin may have found a way to do just that. By ferrying sodium and chloride ions into the cancer cells, the cells are triggered to go through apoptosis, or a programmed cell death.

Alzheimer’s Research Lab Scientists at UCSD Receive $12.5M

The University of California, San Diego recently received a $12.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund Alzheimer’s disease research. The 2014 study was awarded life science research funding from the administering institute: National Institute on Aging. Dr. Paul Aisen, the project leader, joined the Department of Neurosciences at UCSD in 2007. Before being appointed director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study (ADCS) at the University of California, San Diego, he was a professor of neurology and medicine and director of the Memory Disorders Program at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Bioresearch Jumps Forward with Harvard Mitochondria Breakthrough

In perhaps the crowning achievement of a decade of work, a group of Harvard University researchers have identified the specific protein responsible for calcium absorption in mitochondria, solving a long-standing and crucial problem for our understanding of an essential cellular component.

Drawing on resources such as "the Human Genome Project, freely downloadable genomic databases, and a few tricks," as Vamsi Mootha, the project leader and associate professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School, put it, the project represents a significant step forward for the field and should open the door to treatment of a number of diseases thought to be related to calcium deficiency in mitochondria. Particularly remarkable about the study is its synthesis of recently-developed cellular and genomic technologies to solve the problem.
