New Preemie Research Center To Open At UPenn

Posted by Laura Braden on Wed, Dec 03, 2014

The new center in Philadelphia will help life science researchers better understand what causes preterm birth. Premature birth, babies born before 37 weeks, can cause serious health problems for the half a million babies born early every year in the U.S. Health risks for premature babies include cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, vision and breathing problems, and hearing impairment. There are many different factors that can lead to preterm birth, but most of these factors are poorly understood. Further research is clearly needed to help better understand the causes of premature birth to lead to preventative methods. The March of Dimes Foundation of Philadelphia recently announced that it will donate $10 million over five years to establish a new Prematurity Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Life Science Funding News on our Company Blog

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Wed, Sep 25, 2013

In an article on our Science Market Update blog last week, we featured some life science funding news stories that we covered in our Life Science Company and Industry News Briefs blog the week before. We’d like to do the same this week because a number of last week’s funding news stories may be of interest to lab suppliers working to sell lab equipment at these well-funded research institutions. In the following paragraphs, we’ll give a brief summary of what schools received funding, how much funding they received, and what the topic of research is. We’ll also include links for further reading.

U. Penn Researchers Redesign Painkiller Receptor

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Tue, Sep 10, 2013

A new study at the University of Pennsylvania, published in the journal PLOS ONE, has had researchers develop a variant of the mu opioid receptor that is water-soluble and can be grown in large quantities in bacteria. When the mu opiod receptor binds with opioid molecules, a strong reduction in the sensation of pain occurs. Unfortunately, fatal side effects can occur. According to a University of Pennsylvania news article, researchers at the university sought to address this issue by identifying the hydrophobic amino acids on the exterior of a structured model of the protein.
