Fred Hutch: $50.5M for HIV Research This Year

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has a history of medical breakthroughs in cancer research, and this time, researchers at the facility are taking the lead in developing solutions to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Thanks to enormous funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH), one powerful team of researchers from Fred Hutch in particular, along with researchers from the University of Washington and several other institutions, are running studies throughout the United States, Africa, Latin America, China, and Europe. Specifically investigating the relationship between the virus and its transmission processes, Fred Hutch researchers formed the group known as defeatHIV, in hopes of discovering whether or not the immune system can build a prevention of infection if exposed through a vaccine or otherwise.

University of Illinois at Chicago: Reaching for NCI designation by 2021

The University of Illinois Cancer Center, the only public-university based cancer center in Chicago, is pursuing designations from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a branch of the National Institutes of Health. The prestigious designation would mean increased financial support from the NIH, resulting in more opportunities for researchers as well as an economic benefit for the entire community.

Northwestern Receives $9.39M From Cherished Faculty Members

Utah’s Department of Bioengineering Spends $17M Annually on Research and Produces Breakthrough in 3D Bioprinting

The University of Utah is recognized as a Top-Tier 1 research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions in Higher Education. According to the Vice President of Research the University was awarded 2,326 grants in 2018 and had $515 million in research funding. According to the National Institutes of Health, the university received $152,843,112 from them this year.

UCLA: $3.7M NIH Grant for Brain Imaging Technology Research

A unique opportunity to advance research into the function of the human brain has been presented to three UCLA neuroscientists. Michele Basso, Dr. Peyman Golshani and Daniel Aharoni have received a $3.7 million, three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop imaging technology to record tens of thousands of neurons with the intent of learning how disease impacts the brain’s function.

Johns Hopkins Researcher Receives $7.7M From NIH for Parkinson's Research

Nearly one million American’s live with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The direct and indirect costs of Parkinson’s, including treatment, social security payments and lost income, total nearly $25 billion per year in the United States. Medications alone average $2,500 per year per patient. Currently, there is no definitive test for PD and, while there are treatments, there is no cure. With the help of over $7.7 million in NIH funding, the Director of the Morris K. Udall Parkinson’s Disease Research Center at Johns Hopkins, Ted Dawson M.D., Ph.D. hopes to change that.

3 UC San Diego Research Programs Receive Grants Totaling Over $28M

U Georgia Receives $2.3M to Study Stress’s Effect on Children’s Immune System

According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause a number of health issues including high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.  A new University of Georgia, Athens (UGA) study is being funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to show how stress affects children’s immune system. This $2.3 million, Director’s New Innovator Award, will allow researchers to correlate acute stress with how children’s immune systems respond to vaccination.

UC San Diego Receives $50M Gift for Eye Disease Research

Renowned communications pioneer Andrew J. Viterbi has given $50 million to the University of California San Diego in honor of his father, ophthalmologist Achille Viterbi. The gift will result in the founding of the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology and the Viterbi Family Vision Research Center as well as establish six new endowed faculty chairs.
