Medical research building construction is underway at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with high hopes for top level research once the three stages of this project have all been completed. The goal for this project, which together will be called the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR), "is to create a new kind of, almost revolutionary, model for how we do medical research," said Dr. Robert Golden, dean of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

The University of Wisconsin at Madison is doing very well launching bioscience startups and attracting young entrepreneurs to set up shop near the sprawling campus on Lake Mendota. The University Research Park is so popular there's a huge Phase II addition several years in the planning and due to break ground any day. Funding for university spinoffs, like the NIH's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants, are helping to fuel Madison's bioscience economy too, as a team from the Dept. of Chemical and Biological Engineering just proved in securing $362,489 towards developing its novel advanced biomaterials for wound healing and surgical applications.

The University of Wisconsin at Madison continues its fearless pursuit not only of knowledge, in the form of cutting-edge science research, but modern paradigms within which to conduct tomorrow's research and train tomorrow's scientists and thinkers. Two weeks ago we reported on UW-Madison's reorganization of several of its basic science departments to keep up with new directions in research (read blog). Now the Badgers are productively rearranging the field again with the announcement of a dual-degree Program in Neuroscience and Law, offering students the opportunity to earn a Ph.D. in neuroscience and a J.D. in law at the same time.

New stem cell research by University of Wisconsin scientists may lead to new therapies and possible cures for numerous genetic heart diseases. The UW research team was led by Craig January and Tim Kamp, professors of medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. These researchers are the first to use stem cells to study the genetic mechanisms in heart disease.

Relations between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the state's business sector have undergone a wholesale reversal from 30 years ago, when academic researchers were discouraged from starting up companies and the school's idea of a research park was a farm. Today, Madison's University Research Park is a thriving business center, start-up incubator, and campus extension all in one. And faculty are now actively encouraged to go into business, even given the resources to do so. Intellectual licensing brings in a lot of money to the state, and companies bring jobs that pay well.
