According to John Hopkins Medicine, 50 to 80 percent of U.S. adults have the oral herpes virus and many don’t know it. Most commonly associated with “cold sores” or “fever blister” the herpes virus can cause other, more serious symptoms as well. These include severe flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes and headaches. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded Afsar Naqvi, assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago’s College of Dentistry, a five year, $2 million grant to study this wide spread and yet often misdiagnosed disease.

Ford Motor Co. has agreed to lease the fourth floor of the University of Michigan’s new robotics facility. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the $75-million, 140,000-square-foot, four-story complex, named for the automotive giant, were held in April, according to U-M news reports. The new building will consolidate all the robotics research programs on the Ann Arbor campus.

Thanks to a $1.5 million, four-year, grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), scientists at Michigan State University will conduct a study aimed at identifying the brain mechanisms responsible for causing psychosis.

The University of Michigan Center for the Discovery of New Medicines (CDNM) has awarded research funding to seven faculty members from across the U-M campus for new drug development projects. The goal of University of Michigan’s CDNM is to accelerate the path toward commercialization for novel and translational approaches to potential therapies. They do this by assisting investigators with financial support as well as providing guidance and expertise. Pilot grants of up to $50,000 are awarded twice per year. On average, 20 people die each day while waiting for an organ transplant, according to the United Network of Organ Sharing. However, scientists at the University of Minnesota envision a day when organ transplants from donors will no longer be necessary. Instead, failing organs will be replaced with ones created by specialized 3D printers. In a giant step toward that goal, researchers have manufactured lifelike artificial organ models using a custom-built 3D printer. These models mimic the exact anatomical structure, mechanical properties, as well as the look and feel of real organs. This research project is supported by two, five-year NIH grants that total over $2.6 million.

Researchers at the Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA have developed a new protocol which could serve as the first step toward stem cell-based therapies to restore sensation in paralyzed people who have lost feeling in parts of their body.
