Researchers at Stony Brook University recently received $1.2 million in life science funding from the NIH for a Sphingolipids in Cancer Biology and Therapy project led by Yusuf Awni Hannun. According to Stony Brook University, Dr. Hanuun is a renowned molecular biologist and physician-researcher interested in the molecular mechanisms of cancer. In 2012, he was appointed director of the Stony Brook Cancer Center, and he also serves as the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine and Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine. Researchers from Rockefeller University and Necker Medical School in Paris worked together to discover one way fungal infections spread below the skin’s surface on a genetic level. The condition, known as dermatophytosis, can mean that an infection spreads to the lymph nodes, bones, digestive tract or the brain. The team of researchers discovered a genetic deficiency that makes this possible, shedding light on the theory that says genetic deficiencies can cause normally healthy people to become very ill from an infection.

Columbia University Medical Center administrators recently broke ground at a new medical facility, which will be called the Medical and Graduate Education Building. Columbia University is planning on completing the new medical facility by 2016. Located on Haven Avenue between 171st and 172nd streets in Washington Heights, the building is expected to help resolve the medical center’s space shortages. Architecture firms Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Genseler designed the building, which is described as modern and includes floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a terrace on top of the building with great views of the Hudson River.

Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center recently conducted a study examining brains of a number of different ages donated by people who died without signs of neurologic disease. During the course of the investigation, researchers came to the conclusion that a certain hippocampus gene’s function deteriorates in older people. The researchers believe that age-related memory loss is distinct condition from Alzheimer’s or pre-Alzheimer’s, and that the condition may be treatable in the future.

Science researchers at Rockefeller University, Duke University and the University of California, San Francisco recently conducted a study that found that the pain and red skin associated with sunburn is caused by a molecule that’s heavily concentrated in the skin’s epidermis. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The results of this study could lead to a way to prevent sunburn and possibly other sources of pain.

Clinical trials were recently conducted and proved promising for a Lyme Disease vaccine developed by science researchers at Stony Brook University. The vaccine proved to produce a large number of antibodies against all targeted species of Borrelia, which causes Lyme Disease in Europe and the United States. Baxter International S.A., who worked with Stony Brook University researchers to develop the vaccine, conducted the clinical trials.

Science researcher C. David Allis is head of the Laboratory of Chromatin Biology and Epigenetics at Rockefeller University, and he has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Starr Cancer Consortium. As the leader of one of five cancer research teams from New York City based members of the consortium, Allis was one of 27 people to submit a grant application and a member of one of five collaborative cancer research teams selected as a winner. The Starr Cancer Consortium gave out a total of $5 million dollars over two years.
