The University of Arizona Health Sciences-Banner Health has received the largest National Institute of Health (NIH) grant award in the state’s history. Dr. Jay F. Sarthy of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has been awarded a $231,000 grant over the next four years from The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation as one of five scientists receiving the Damon Runyon-Sohn Pediatric Cancer Fellowship Award. The award will be used to study pediatric brain cancer with the ultimate goal being the development of new drugs to restore the ability of cells to package DNA correctly eliminating cancer. Under the mentorship of Dr. Steven Henikoff, a geneticist, and Dr. Jim Olson, a neuro-oncologist, Sarthy will try to develop new affordable methods of studying epigenetics and DNA packaging in pediatric cancer.

According to John Hopkins Medicine, 50 to 80 percent of U.S. adults have the oral herpes virus and many don’t know it. Most commonly associated with “cold sores” or “fever blister” the herpes virus can cause other, more serious symptoms as well. These include severe flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes and headaches. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded Afsar Naqvi, assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago’s College of Dentistry, a five year, $2 million grant to study this wide spread and yet often misdiagnosed disease.

An estimated 15 million Americans will develop Alzheimer’s disease by 2060, according to researchers at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. The December 2017 study is the first of its kind to estimate the numbers of Americans with preclinical Alzheimer’s disease.

UC San Diego’s Geriatric Emergency Room has received a Level 1 designation, the highest and most comprehensive level of accreditation awarded by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Located on the La Jolla campus, it is California’s first geriatric emergency room. It is one of eight geriatric ERs in the U.S. to earn accreditation.

UC San Diego’s new outpatient pavilion, which opened in March of this year, has been named the Koman Family Outpatient Clinic in tribute to Bill and Amy Koman and their family. The cancer research advocates have raised millions for the La Jolla campus’ medical facilities over the past 18 years.Their philanthropic efforts have focused on supporting collaborative cancer research at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Salk Institute, Sanford-Burnham Prebys Medical Center and Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego and now the outpatient pavilion. The couple founded the Padres Pedal the Cause, an annual cycling event that raised $20 million between its inception in 2010 and 2016, according to an article in Ranch & Coast Magazine.

A $150 million gift to the University of Michigan will boost Michigan Medicine’s cancer research efforts, enabling the school to attract researchers from around the world as well as develop the next generation of researchers. The gift from alum Richard Roger and his wife, Susan, is one of the largest in the university’s history. In recognition of their many years of giving and service, the Comprehensive Cancer Center was renamed the Rogel Cancer Center by the U-M Regents in March.

Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus and its partner, Colorado Clinical and Transitional Sciences Institute (CCTSI), recently received a new five-year $46.5 million grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH).
“The general public may not know the CCTSI name,” Dr. Sokol, CCTSI director and professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, stated in an article for CU Anschutz Today. “But they have probably benefited from the research that has come out of our institute over the past 10 years.”
Since its inception, Institute staff have conducted research that has led to a cure for hepatitis C; developed treatments for cystic fibrosis; boosted the rates of health screenings in underserved Colorado communities; and developed community-based approaches to teaching CPR.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine are hopeful the combination of the experimental drug cirmtuzumab along with ibrutinub can halt the progression of chronic B-cell cancers. In an article published in the June 1 issue of Cell Stem Cell, researchers reported that treatment of 26 chronic leukemia patients with the experimental drug combination appeared to stop the disease’s progress.
