BIO5 Scientists Bring in Millions in NIH Funding to the University of Arizona

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards the University of Arizona roughly 200 grants totaling about $100 million each year. In 2018 the numbers increased to 266 grants totaling $125,091,695. Five University of South Florida Faculty Honored for Inventions

Five University of South Florida (USF) Professors received 2018 Excellence in Innovation Awards from the university’s chapter of the National Academy of Inventors in September. USF Research News states that the faculty were recognized for inventing and patenting new technology, creating startup companies and securing research grants and outside investment funding as well as supporting student innovators in research projects.

University of Illinois Receives $2M for Herpes Virus Research

According to John Hopkins Medicine, 50 to 80 percent of U.S. adults have the oral herpes virus and many don’t know it. Most commonly associated with “cold sores” or “fever blister” the herpes virus can cause other, more serious symptoms as well. These include severe flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes and headaches. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded Afsar Naqvi, assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago’s College of Dentistry, a five year, $2 million grant to study this wide spread and yet often misdiagnosed disease.
