$1 Million Awarded to Emory Bioresearchers to Study Evolution of Gene Regulation

Posted by Laura Braden on Wed, Feb 25, 2015

Charles Darwin had a theory. A theory that people and animals could evolve by growing, changing and adapting to their conditions. Evolution, now widely known and accepted throughout the world of science, still has many unknown factors, and how certain things evolve is still being studied. How proteins evolve from having one function to multiple functions, and how RNA molecules evolve from being unimportant to having vital roles in cell regulation are a few of the things that scientists are still researching. Georgia Bioresearchers Create New Vaccine for Curing Rabies

Posted by Laura Braden on Tue, Feb 24, 2015

As children, we are often taught to avoid contact with wild animals that can potentially carry deadly diseases that can be transferred to humans or other animals, such as rabies. Once someone has been bit by an animal infected with rabies, it doesn't take long for the disease to spread into the central nervous system, where it becomes fatal. There has always been only a small time frame where treatment for rabies can be sought. The real threat of rabies have been shown in popular culture in movies such as "Old Yeller" and "Cujo." Rockefeller Research Reveals Retrovirus Reservoirs

Posted by David Larsen on Wed, Feb 18, 2015

Drugs for HIV have become adept at suppressing infection, but they still can’t eliminate it. That’s because the medication in these pills doesn’t touch the virus’ hidden reserves, which lie dormant within infected white blood cells. Unlock the secrets of this pool of latent virus, scientists believe, and it may become possible to cure – not just control – HIV.

Mt. Sinai Researchers Find Gene to Keep Tumor Cells Active or Dormant

Posted by Laura Braden on Tue, Feb 17, 2015

Dormant versus active. These words bring about thoughts of volcanoes that haven't erupted in millions of years, but have the potential to at any time. Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have discovered that certain cells, like volcanoes, can stay dormant until a certain factor (or switch) is flipped to activate them. Bacteria Prefer to Double Down

Posted by David Larsen on Mon, Feb 16, 2015

A recent study performed by a group of scientists led by Suckjoon Jun of the University of California at San Diego, and including Petra Levin, associate professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louisfound that rather than doubling in size every generation, each bacteria cell added the same volume (or mass; the term reflects the measurement technique). Crucially a cell that was small added the same volume as a cell that was large.

5 Tips to Stay Informed and Increase Lab Sales

Posted by Robert Larkin on Fri, Feb 13, 2015

In an active and extremely well funded market such as life science research, it can be difficult to stay informed about which universities are receiving funding and how funding is being used.

Every year, billions of dollars are granted, awarded and donated to life science research facilities around the United States. At dozens of institutions across the nation, public and private funding regularly provides for the purchase of new lab equipment and construction of new research facilities.

Thanks to the daily Science Market Update blog, you can stay five steps ahead of the competition by reading about the latest research funding and life science news.

How Life Science Funding Reports Can Help You Increase Lab Sales

Posted by Robert Larkin on Thu, Feb 12, 2015

As a laboratory equipment vendor, many factors affect your decision to promote your products in a specific research market. Some questions, such as “are there universities or hospitals in this area?” and “do life science researchers work at those universities?” can be answered with a simple Google search. Other questions, however, might require more digging.
