U. Idaho Receives 5 Grants Worth $.5M

The University of Idaho, Moscow is home to five newly funded projects thanks to a set of grants dispersed by the Idaho Department of Commerce IGEM (Idaho Global Entrepreneurial Mission) Council. It was recently announced that the council was also awarding IGEM grants to Idaho State University and Boise State University, with five of the grants going toward research at University of Idaho.

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2014 are:

  1. About 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed
  2. About 29,480 men will die of prostate cancer
  3. About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.
  4. Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40.

According to a university press release, UC Davis surgeons have launched a “proof-of-concept” clinical trial to test the safety and efficacy of a device that can rapidly concentrate and extract young cells from fluid used during orthopaedic surgery. The new approach may prove essential to delivering stem cell therapy to stubborn, non-healing bone fractures.
