A $150 million gift to the University of Michigan will boost Michigan Medicine’s cancer research efforts, enabling the school to attract researchers from around the world as well as develop the next generation of researchers. The gift from alum Richard Roger and his wife, Susan, is one of the largest in the university’s history. In recognition of their many years of giving and service, the Comprehensive Cancer Center was renamed the Rogel Cancer Center by the U-M Regents in March.

Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus and its partner, Colorado Clinical and Transitional Sciences Institute (CCTSI), recently received a new five-year $46.5 million grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH).
“The general public may not know the CCTSI name,” Dr. Sokol, CCTSI director and professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, stated in an article for CU Anschutz Today. “But they have probably benefited from the research that has come out of our institute over the past 10 years.”
Since its inception, Institute staff have conducted research that has led to a cure for hepatitis C; developed treatments for cystic fibrosis; boosted the rates of health screenings in underserved Colorado communities; and developed community-based approaches to teaching CPR.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine are hopeful the combination of the experimental drug cirmtuzumab along with ibrutinub can halt the progression of chronic B-cell cancers. In an article published in the June 1 issue of Cell Stem Cell, researchers reported that treatment of 26 chronic leukemia patients with the experimental drug combination appeared to stop the disease’s progress.

Ford Motor Co. has agreed to lease the fourth floor of the University of Michigan’s new robotics facility. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the $75-million, 140,000-square-foot, four-story complex, named for the automotive giant, were held in April, according to U-M news reports. The new building will consolidate all the robotics research programs on the Ann Arbor campus.

UC San Diego has received federal support to continue its efforts to develop new treatments and, ultimately, find a cure for HIV/AIDS. A five-year, $15 million grant has been awarded to the university’s Center for AIDS Research by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The grant signals the federal agency’s support of the university’s research efforts that started in 1994, the height of the AIDS epidemic.

UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento ranked in the top 20 percent of national medical schools for research funding by the National Institute of Health (NIH). According to the 2017 report issued by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, the school received $176 million to fund 356 grant proposals last year. University of California San Francisco recently received a $2,370,047 grant from the National Institutes of Health(NIH). This is the fourth year that funding has been allocated for a $17 million multi-center study to improve long-term survival of kidney transplant recipients.
The goal is to reduce or eliminate inflammation in kidney transplant patients and prevent decline in function. The study involves two clinical trials and simultaneous research by biologists and researchers.

Construction is underway on a new $357 million neurosciences building on UC San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus. The 270,000-square-foot, six-story building will house the departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Neurological Surgery all under one roof.
