Fred Hutchinson Research Market gets $20M From Amazon's CEO Family

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center received a donation of $20 million from Mike Bezos, a family member of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos this April to support development of novel cancer immunotherapies. This donation is the largest single contribution in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center’s history.

UPitt Will Receive $2 Million From the NIH for Human Cancer

Patrick Moore, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Molecular Virology Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI), will receive more than a $2 million new grant from the NIH to continue research into the human cancer virus that causes most Merkel cell carcinomas, a rare but deadly skin cancer. This new grant will fund the research through March 2019.

A study by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimates that we will need to produce approximately 70 percent more food by the year 2050, at which point the world will be home to about 2.3 billion more people than today. Working to boost agricultural yield is thus a critical field of study, as the photosynthesis optimization team at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign knows quite well.

Mayo Clinic Finds Genetic Instigator of IBS

As of yet, there is no treatment for IBS itself, just methods to alleviate the symptoms. However, new and conclusive evidence from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota points to a gene responsible for IBS in some patients.
