Alzheimer’s Research Market on the Rise at UCSB and Worldwide

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Mon, Dec 09, 2013

Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara have discovered the age and origin of an E280A gene mutation that has caused early-onset Alzheimer’s in a Columbian family. The family, whose members have had Alzheimer’s with more frequency than most families, was traced to a single founder dating from the 1500’s. The research team sequenced the genomes of more than 100 family members and identified the regions of common ancestry. They then used this information to trace the source of the Alzheimer’s mutation.

UCI Researcher Uncovers New Information on Food-Borne Illness

Posted by Katheryn Rein on Fri, Nov 15, 2013

The botulism toxin is one of the most dangerous toxins known to us, with as little as one microgram having enough spores to be fatal to a human adult. These neurotoxins are produced from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum and cause important communications between muscles and nerve cells to be corrupted. This bacterium causes the botulism illness by inducing paralysis and, in extreme cases, respiratory arrest by blocking these vital nerve functions.
