Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh recently received $10.4 million in life science funding from the NIH at the end of July this year. The administering center for the award at the NIH was the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, and the life science funding will be given to the University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Institute. A laboratory testing kit developed at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Developed by Chuck Perou, PhD and professor of genetics and pathology, the testing kit estimates the risk of breast cancer relapse even in cases of anti-hormone treatment. According to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, other scientists who worked with Perou include Dr. Joel Parker and Dr. Maggie Cheang at the University of North Carolina.

Researchers at Emory University have discovered a way of packaging stem cells that make them much more effective in heart therapies. Using a capsule made of alginate, a gel-like substance, the researchers package the stem cells and attach them to the heart within a patch. According to Emory University, this capsule cause the stem cells’ healing to take place over time, rather than dying soon after they are introduced to the body, as they do without the capsule.

Researchers at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering recently received $3.5 million in life science funding from the NIH. The grant is called a Transformative Research Award. The NIH’s aim in creating this grant is to fund high-risk, high-reward research. According to News Medical, the NIH funded only 10 of these projects in 2013, one of which is Harvard University’s DNA-based microscopy method of viewing cells.

Lab suppliers working to market life science solutions in Philadelphia will find a market rich with life science funding at Thomas Jefferson University. According to recent NIH and NSF funding statistics, the NIH awarded Thomas Jefferson University $49.7 million in research funding in 2012. In addition to receiving NIH research funding, Thomas Jefferson University received $318,984 in NSF life science funding for life science projects alone.
