This class of diseases, known as autoimmune diseases, may seem like a very specialized and rare affliction, but in truth, it manifests itself in the form of several commonly known ailments like rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. A new study from the University of California, San Francisco points to some of the causes and thus possible treatments for autoimmune diseases.

$5.8 Million Awarded to New Collaborative Program to Study Genes to Find New Drug Targets

There are thousands of genes in the human genome that all have different purposes. At least 3,000 of these genes are known to express proteins that can be altered by different medications, however, the FDA has only approved drugs that target around 10 percent of these genes. That means that there are still thousands of genes that have not been thoroughly studied that, with the help of the right medication, could be targeted to help improve human health. The National Institutes of Health Common Fund has awarded 8 U.S. institutions $5.8 million for a new collaborative three-year program called Illuminating the Druggable Genome (IDG) that will study different genes and their potential to be modified by different medicines.

UCSF Ranked 2nd for NIH Biomedical Research Grants

The University of California, San Francisco was recently ranked number two in the country for receiving biomedical research grants from the NIH, and it was also the number one ranked public school in the country for receiving these grants. According to the University of California, San Francisco news page, this funding allows UCSF researchers to undertake groundbreaking studies that aim at a better understanding of cancer, diabetes, HIV, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease.
