Fred Hutch: $50.5M for HIV Research This Year

Posted by Dianna Matyola on Wed, Jul 24, 2019

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has a history of medical breakthroughs in cancer research, and this time, researchers at the facility are taking the lead in developing solutions to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Thanks to enormous funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH), one powerful team of researchers from Fred Hutch in particular, along with researchers from the University of Washington and several other institutions, are running studies throughout the United States, Africa, Latin America, China, and Europe. Specifically investigating the relationship between the virus and its transmission processes, Fred Hutch researchers formed the group known as defeatHIV, in hopes of discovering whether or not the immune system can build a prevention of infection if exposed through a vaccine or otherwise.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Receives Four Year, $231K Grant To Study Pediatric Brain Cancer

Posted by Emily Norwood on Mon, Aug 13, 2018

Dr. Jay F. Sarthy of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has been awarded a $231,000 grant over the next four years from The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation as one of five scientists receiving the Damon Runyon-Sohn Pediatric Cancer Fellowship Award. The award will be used to study pediatric brain cancer with the ultimate goal being the development of new drugs to restore the ability of cells to package DNA correctly eliminating cancer. Under the mentorship of Dr. Steven Henikoff, a geneticist, and  Dr. Jim Olson, a neuro-oncologist, Sarthy will try to develop new affordable methods of studying epigenetics and DNA packaging in pediatric cancer.

Fred Hutch Researchers Receive $1M to Study Skeletal Muscles and Cancer Metastasis

Posted by Laura Braden on Fri, Sep 29, 2017

Skeletal_muscle_-_longitudinal_section.jpg

For cancer patients with tumors, there always a risk of the tumor spreading to a different organ, which makes fighting the cancer more difficult and risky. However, this spread of cancer very rarely occurs on skeletal muscles, which make up nearly 50% of body mass. Why don't these metastatic cancer cells move to and grow on these skeletal muscles? Researchers are still unclear. Now, with the help of a recent $1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation, a research team at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will focus on studying this elusive topic. (Image courtesy of CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons)

Fred Hutch: $7M in Research Funding for Study of Second Primary Breast Cancer

Posted by Rebecca Partridge on Wed, Aug 16, 2017

Between 3 to 20 percent of women with breast cancer will develop another primary cancer tumor in the opposite breast within ten years of the first diagnosis. Though previous studies have identified some environmental, genetic, and treatment-related risk factors for contralateral breast cancer, scientists still don’t fully understand what causes these second primary cancers.

Fred Hutch Receives $6.4M in Research Funding to Improve Heart Health of Cancer Survivors

Posted by Rebecca Partridge on Tue, Jun 27, 2017

In March, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) approved a $3.7 million, five-year grant to extend Dr. Eric Chow’s research into improving treatment of cardiovascular risk factors in childhood cancer survivors. Dr. Chow is a clinical researcher, epidemiologist, and pediatric oncologist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. This is one of two research grants to be awarded to Dr. Chow by the National Cancer Institute. The NCI also chose to extend Dr. Chow’s study of the long-term efficacy of a medication meant to minimize or prevent heart injury in pediatric patients going through chemotherapy. This $2.7 million in research funding will allow for four more years of studies regarding the use of dexrazoxane in pediatric cancer patients.

$23.5M Granted to Fred Hutch Researchers to Defeat HIV

Posted by Laura Braden on Wed, Jul 27, 2016

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Cener in Seattle, WA. DefeatHIV, an initiative based out of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA, has been researching potential cures for HIV over the past 5 years. Their research has focused on the use of blood cells genetically modified to be resistant to the HIV virus. It was recently announced that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded the DefeatHIV team a new grant of $23.5 million that will continue to support their research on this potential cure for an additional 5 years.

Fred Hutch Researchers Identify Biology-Based Treatment for Lung Cancer

Posted by Laura Braden on Mon, Jun 20, 2016

Smoking, one of the causes of small-cell lung cancer.

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) makes up about 10 - 15% of all lung cancer diagnoses, and is caused by smoking and inhaling second-hand smoke. This is an aggressive type of cancer that spreads quickly, and recurs extremely frequently after patients undergo chemotherapy treatments. Treatments for SCLC have not changed much in the past 30 years, but a team of researchers led by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle has been investigating potential new therapy methods for the cancer and recently uncovered a gene that has the potential to be used in biology-based treatments for SCLC.
