Washington State University, Pullman is nearing its $1 billion goal to raise new funding for research and operations through The Campaign for Washington State University. So far, the campaign has raised $900 million.

Columbia University’s medical school is undergoing a groundbreaking transformation in the most literal sense of the word: Construction crews have broken ground on one of two new medical buildings in the works at the powerhouse university’s campus. A research scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles recently received a $5.1 million life science grant for stem cell research from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine. California’s state stem cell agency awarded the new research funding to UCLA’s Dr. John Chute so that he may further his investigations into creating new stem cell therapies in the medical field.

The University of Southern California recently received a new research grant worth $5.6 million from the National Institutes of Health for the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. The administering organization was the National Cancer Institute, and the project leader is Dr. Stephen Gruber, a Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine and the H. Leslie Hoffman and Elaine S. Hoffman Chair in Cancer Research.

Federal science research funding has taken a great leap at the University of California, Riverside in the past 12 months: an $8 million leap, to be exact, in federally funded new research grants. UC Riverside aspires to gain a bigger market share over the next five years. Currently, the university is in the top 100 universities for federally funded research. By working on innovative projects and increasing the UC Riverside influence in the science research community, UC Riverside hopes to reach the top 50 universities in coming years. The University of California, Riverside campus aims to triple funding in about ten years, requiring an annual growth of about 14 percent.

New life science research funding at the University of California, San Diego was recently awarded in the amount of $7.5 million to the Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care. The donor, Pauline Foster, is a community philanthropist who has given a great deal of support to the University of California, San Diego over the years. The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care will encompass three floors at the Jacobs Medical Center and be home to medical staff whose purpose is caring for the complex needs of patients with cancer.

A new $25 million research fund has been established at Rockefeller University to aid in new techniques for drug discovery. The Robertson Therapeutic Development Fund was created in light of a generous $25 million gift from the Robertson Foundation, established by investment manager Julian H. Robertson, Jr. and his family.

Stony Brook University recently received $60 million in new funding to build a state-of-the-art Innovation and Discovery Center on its Research and Development Park campus. The center will include 200,000 square feet of new lab space at Stony Brook University as well as office space for startup businesses. The new funding comes from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s START-UP NY initiative, which aims to give businesses tax breaks to start up, relocate, or add new locations in New York by working with New York public and private universities.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center recently received an $11 million life science research grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. The organization within the NIH providing this latest round of life science funding is the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Project leader Dr. Margaret Juliana McElrath is a professor of medicine at the University of Washington. Her research lab studies are focused on identifying and characterizing cellular immune responses that may help protect patients against HIV infection or disease.

Research lab scientists at Columbia University received $6.3 million in life science research funding this spring for Columbia’s Center for Research in Diagnostics and Discovery. The research grant was awarded by the administering institute the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The department of Public Health and Preventative Medicine within the Schools of Public Health at Columbia University will use the research funding to advance detection of certain diseases and predict how effective specific therapies can be in prevention and treatment.
