Hutchinson Center Stem Cells Improve Chemotherapy for Brain Cancer

Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have recently developed a stem cell technique that will greatly decrease the toxic side effects of chemotherapy for brain cancer patients. The method uses stem cells that have been genetically modified to resist chemotherapy to protect vulnerable bone marrow and blood cells while allowing the chemotherapy to kill brain cancer cells. This Hutchinson Center stem cell research was made possible by nearly $1.8 million in NIH funding

WSU Science Research Yields New Prostate Cancer Imaging Technology

Science Research at Washington State University, Pullman has led to a new imaging technology for prostate cancer as well as several potential treatments. The technology uses a protein found only on the surface of prostate cancer cells called PSMA (Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen) as a target for compounds that can lead to easy detection of tumors or even destroy the tumors themselves.

Stem Cell Research Funding at University of Washington Ranks High

The stem cell research programs University of Washington have received $24.6 million in new stem cell research funding from the National Institutes of Health (FY 2010 and 2011 to date). WSU Bioscience Program Receives Funding to Expand into New Research Programs

Over the past year Washington State's Professional Science Master's program has enjoyed incredible success. The program was launched last May in the School of Molecular Biosciences and was designed to train students in successful business practices and bioscience simultaneously. The program was the first of its kind in the state and was so successful that WSU plans to expand it into its several new research programs including bio-products, environmental sustainability and health informatics.

Stem Cell Research Funded at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

The National Institutes of Health has awarded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center $4.8 million in new stem cell research funding.  The four-year grant will go to research the effect of a patient's DNA on the outcome and success of a stem cell transplant.
