In 2010, the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico blew-out, leading to the largest off-shore oil spill in the United States, known as the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, or the BP Oil Spill. 4.9 million barrels of oil are estimated to have gushed into the Gulf waters during this time, causing an immense impact on the ecosystem in the Gulf. Now, 4 years after the spill, the Gulf of Mexico is still greatly impacted and affected by the oil left in the water. Researchers at the University of Georgia, Athens recently received $18.8 million to continue their study of the impacts of this oil spill on the ecosystem.

Fragile X syndrome is a neurodegenerative, genetic disease that causes intellectual, behavioral, and learning challenges. According to the CDC, it is the most common cause of inherited intellectual disability and even though it affects both men and women, it occurs more commonly and more severely in men. There are many other diseases associated with Fragile X, such as autism and epilepsy. Currently, there are no cures for the syndrome, but there are treatments that can help people suffering from the disorder learn some important skills. Emory University researchers have recently received a $9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue their study of Fragile X syndrome and its associated disorders.

Emory University is undergoing a $52 million expansion project on the Sanford S. Atwood Chemistry Center. The new Emory research building expansion is largely funded by profits from an HIV-AIDS drug discovered by researchers in the building. The University of Georgia, Athens will receive $44.7 million for the construction of a new UGA building, the Science Learning Center. The 122,500-square-foot facility will add 33 teaching labs to the South campus for the chemistry, biological sciences, plant biology and physics departments.

Researchers at Emory University have discovered a way of packaging stem cells that make them much more effective in heart therapies. Using a capsule made of alginate, a gel-like substance, the researchers package the stem cells and attach them to the heart within a patch. According to Emory University, this capsule cause the stem cells’ healing to take place over time, rather than dying soon after they are introduced to the body, as they do without the capsule.

Researchers at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta will soon be testing a vaccine that could protect patients against a strain of bird flu, H7N9 influenza, which caused a illness and death in China last spring.
