Researchers at Penn Medicine have gone through some great pains to find the first potential new class of novel anesthetics since the 1970s. Starting with a pool of over 350,000 compounds, they have isolated two compounds with the potential to be developed into new, safer general anesthetics.

The sciences of medical care, medical teaching and bioresearch at University of California, Los Angeles have received a boost in the form of an unrestricted gift of $50 million. Given to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA from the estate of Irma and Norman Switzer, the gift was announced Nov. 12 at a gathering of faculty, staff members, the school’s board of visitors and friends of the Switzer family.

Going “green” in chemistry has become a lot more lucrative than was anticipated just 18 short months ago. In June of 2013, Biotechnology Calendar Inc. reported that the green chemistry market was expected to grow from $2.8 billion in 2011 to $98.5B by 2020 and will save the industry $65.5B. However, recent reports indicate that we may actually see growth in the bio-based chemicals market from $78B in 2012 to $198B by 2017, eventually accounting for 50% of the chemicals market by 2050.

Many people might be unaware that genes can be turned on and off, just like a light switch. Researchers at Duke University know this, and they are among several institutions receiving NIH funding to discover the nature of the "light switch" that makes it all possible. Duke University, in collaboration with the Center for Genomic and Computational Biology is one of five centers sharing $28.3 million in grants from the National Human Genome Research Institute to study mechanisms for gene regulation. According to a university press release the Duke University team, led by Tim Reddy, will receive $5.9 million to characterize how human lung epithelial cells respond to anti-inflammatory drugs called glucocorticoids.

California is home to some serious unicellular research, and the National Institute of Health is taking notice. Bioresearch programs at California institutions accounted for a significant portion of the $7.9 million in grants which the NIH awarded to researchers studying single cells. The request for 2014 applications came from the NIH last December to fund programs related to many areas of cellular biology, including personalized treatment for diseases at a cellular level. The grants are supported by the NIH Common Fund’s Single Cell Analysis Program (SCAP) and represents a major boost for many of the 25 research teams that were chosen to receive funding.
