Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Gene Regulatory Networks for Development to be held on 10/08/17 - 10/21/17.
Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) are key to the genomic control of development in animals and plants. To study GRNs requires insights from various research fields, including systems biology, developmental and evolutionary biology, as well as functional genomics, and provides an integrative approach to fundamental research questions in biology. This course introduces the concepts of GRNs, and teaches experimental and computational methods used to study them, through highly interactive lectures, discussions, group projects, and practical tutorials. We will cover a broad range of topics, including transcriptional control systems, the structural organization of hierarchical networks, developmental functions of GRN circuit modules, GRN evolution, and computational modeling using BioTapestry as well as Boolean and quantitative mathematical approaches. Students will learn how to generate GRN models based on data extracted from the literature, and will generate computational models to analyze dynamic circuit behavior. We will present and discuss a broad range of experimental approaches and how they are effectively used for studying gene regulation and developmental GRNs. Examples of experimentally solved developmental GRNs from a variety of organisms, such as flies, sea urchins, frogs, chicken, and mice, will be explored. Students are encouraged to share their research projects in a poster session, and to discuss with course faculty how to apply the approaches taught in the course to their own research questions. The course is intended for advanced graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory: Cell Death to be held on 8/15/17 - 8/19/17
We are pleased to announce the 12th meeting on Cell Death, to be held at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory from Tuesday evening, August 15, until after lunch on Saturday, August 19, 2017. The meeting will cover the field of cell death and apoptosis by specific sessions devoted to the topics listed below.
The format of the meeting will include morning and evening sessions consisting of short talks, limited to approximately 15 minutes, principally on unpublished work. Because the audience will be composed of investigators with rather diverse backgrounds, the session chairs will anchor each session with a 20-minute talk to provide an overview of the specific area. The other submitted abstracts will be presented in poster sessions in the free afternoons. As usual at Cold Spring Harbor Meetings, all abstracts of both poster and platform sessions will be published in an abstract book given to all the participants.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: NYU Nature Conference on Neurogenetics to be held on 8/9/17 - 8/11/17
The application of genetic and genomic approaches to neuroscientific questions is poised to rapidly advance our understanding of how genes influence brain function and disease risk. Recent technological developments in genetics now allow the large scale cataloguing of genetic variation, from common and rare single nucleotide changes to non-coding, regulatory mutations, and how these are related to health and disease. In neuroscience, new tools for monitoring and manipulating neuronal activity, circumscribed circuits and specific cell types allow interrogating the mechanisms of perception, cognition and action. Despite advances on both fronts, there still remains a significant gap between genetics and neuroscience, limiting the potential for this exciting and important area of research to provide new neurobiological insights. The goal of this Nature Conference is to bridge the gap between neuroscientists and geneticists and provide a forum for discussing recent advances and innovative strategies for future research in neurogenetics. The conference will cover the breadth of neurogenetics—from genome-wide association studies for complex psychiatric disorders to mechanistic investigations of genes underlying behavioral traits in model organisms. We hope that this conference will be the first of many and will facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations aimed at developing a more integrated understanding of how genes influence behavior, neuronal development and neurological disease.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Cellular Biology of Addiction to be held on 8/8/17 - 8/14/17
The primary objective of the proposed workshop is to provide an intense dialogue of the fundamentals, state-of-the-art advances and major gaps in the cell and molecular biology of drug addiction. Targeted to new or experienced investigators, the workshop will combine formal presentations and informal discussions to convey the merits and excitement of cellular and molecular approaches to drug addiction research. With the advent of genomics and proteomics, an extraordinary opportunity now exists to develop comprehensive models of neuroadaptative processes fundamental to addiction, withdrawal, craving, relapse to drug use and general brain function. A range of disciplines and topics will be represented, including noninvasive brain imaging to identify drug targets and adaptive processes; neuroadaptative processes at the molecular and cellular level, neural networks and their modulation, the relevance of genotype to susceptibility and drug response; tolerance and adaptation at the cellular level and approaches to exploiting the daunting volume generated by neuroinformatics. This workshop will provide an integrated view of current and novel research on neuroadaptive responses to addiction, foster discussion on collaboration and integration, provide critical information needed to construct a model of addiction as a disease and novel molecular targets for biological treatments. Beyond the plane of scientific endeavor, the information is vital for formulating public policy and for enlightening the public on the neurobiological consequences of drug use and addiction. This workshop is designed to generate interest in this level of analysis, open conduits for collaborations and present novel routes to investigating the neurobiology of addictive drugs.
