Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: The Molecular Stratagem of Glioblastoma
Glioblastomas (GBMs) remain one of the more aggressive cancers, with no change in standard of care for almost 20 years and median lifespan from time of diagnosis to death of about 15 months. This bleak outcome has stimulated ongoing efforts to reveal new insights into tumor components and to develop new strategies for keeping this tumor at bay. This Advanced Course will focus on recent technologies and findings that provide new ways of understanding and potentially treating this tumor.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Advances in Prenatal Molecular Diagnostics 2017 to be held on 11/28/17 - 11/29/17.
Cell-free DNA-based screening and the potential for cell-based screening has upended the field of prenatal testing. While cell-free tests are being used more and more in the clinic, cell-based tests are still on the cusp of commercialization. With both types of tests still in need of improvements in order to truly replace invasive tests, the near-term challenge is determining where the field heads once both options are viable. This meeting will discuss updated comparisons and examine the implementation, insurance, and clinical challenges associated with each test.
Furthermore, with advances in DNA amplification and sequencing comes greater opportunity to garner more information. Much discussion needs to take place in regards to the role of preconception counseling, expanded carrier screening, whole genome versus whole exome sequencing, and the effect these and any prenatal testing may have on the decision to continue a pregnancy or perform fetal therapy.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Workshop on Phenotyping Mouse Models of Human Lung Disease to be held on 10/09/17 - 10/13/17.
This is a unique didactic/hands-on workshop that provides a comprehensive overview of respiratory biology and, in particular, the use of mice as model systems of human lung diseases. The objectives of the workshop include reviews of basic lung biology, structure-function issues surrounding respiratory mechanics, immune responses linked with the pulmonary compartments as well as the lung microenvironment, and the techniques/strategies for reproducible measurements of lung function in mice. Laboratory-based exercises will provide participants with hands-on experience measuring airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), lung volumes and pressure-volume (PV) curves, lung morphometry, sampling techniques and mouse lung histopathology. In addition, the course will review basic mouse genetics, housing and breeding strategies, and survival surgical techniques. The course faculty is comprised of prominent members of the research community who are supported by a core group of research scientists providing insights into cutting edge technologies and experimental strategies.
Part of this workshop includes pathology sessions. If you have any FIXED slides you would like to have analyzed by the workshop pathologist, please bring them with you. Additionally, if you have any interesting FIXED slides you would like to share with the group, please bring these as well. IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT BRING FRESH TISSUE TO THE JACKSON LABORATORY!
Participants completing this workshop will have a working knowledge of basic pulmonary biology and the pathophysiology/histopathology accompanying lung diseases. More importantly, participants will gain the needed exposure to laboratory-based techniques for quantifying pulmonary structure, immunobiology, and lung function – all key endpoint metrics needed to utilize mice as model systems of human respiratory diseases.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: NYU Nature Conference on Neurogenetics to be held on 8/9/17 - 8/11/17
The application of genetic and genomic approaches to neuroscientific questions is poised to rapidly advance our understanding of how genes influence brain function and disease risk. Recent technological developments in genetics now allow the large scale cataloguing of genetic variation, from common and rare single nucleotide changes to non-coding, regulatory mutations, and how these are related to health and disease. In neuroscience, new tools for monitoring and manipulating neuronal activity, circumscribed circuits and specific cell types allow interrogating the mechanisms of perception, cognition and action. Despite advances on both fronts, there still remains a significant gap between genetics and neuroscience, limiting the potential for this exciting and important area of research to provide new neurobiological insights. The goal of this Nature Conference is to bridge the gap between neuroscientists and geneticists and provide a forum for discussing recent advances and innovative strategies for future research in neurogenetics. The conference will cover the breadth of neurogenetics—from genome-wide association studies for complex psychiatric disorders to mechanistic investigations of genes underlying behavioral traits in model organisms. We hope that this conference will be the first of many and will facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations aimed at developing a more integrated understanding of how genes influence behavior, neuronal development and neurological disease.
