WSU Anthropologist Discovered Clues to First Americans

Washington State University molecular anthropologist Brian Kemp used genetic method to address classic questions about the entrance of humans into the Americas. Professor Kemp studied genetic information that extracted from the tooth of an adolescent girl, Naia, who fell into a sinkhole in the Yucatan 12,000 to 13,000 years ago. His discovery will help resolve a longstanding debate about the origins of the first inhabitants of the Americas and the possible connection between the first people and modern Native Americans.

UT Austin Remains Active in Research in 2014

UNR: A Novel Protein-Replacement Therapy discovered

Utah Researchers Discovered Gene Variation in IFITM3 Associated With Kawasaki Disease

Weis, at the University of Utah School of Medicine analyzed the DNA of 140 patients with Kawasaki disease to discover that those with the genetic variation in the IFITM3 gene were significantly more likely to develop coronary artery lesions or enlargement. This discovery has significant implications on the understanding of Kawasaki disease and highly contributes to the global health improvement.

International Opportunity to Grow in Alabama

Living 17 years in a Dadaab refugee camp after fleeing Somalia, Africa, Hussein Issak Magale with his family came to the United States with a resettlement opportunity in 2009. After starting off at the University of Arizona in April 2010, Magale has worked in the Orthopaedic Research Lab and participated in an international research program in Kenya, Africa, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health and administrated by the University of Alabama. He will graduate in this May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology.

A 30-year-old Problem in Breast Cancer Solved at Fred Hutchinson
