Caldwell Memorial Hospital to Join UNC Health Care System

On November 9, the board of directors at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir, North Carolina, made the unanimous decision to take the next step in their exclusive negotiations with the UNC Health Care System.  Close to 75 miles northwest of Charlotte, the 110-bed acute care hospital employs a network of about 50 primary and specialty care physicians as well as advance practice professionals.

Chapel Hill Health Research Study: Boys Reaching Puberty Earlier

Science researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently conducted a study that shows that boys in the United States are entering into puberty earlier than in the past, sometimes as young as at the age of nine, according to a UNC Chapel Hill news article.  The research was published online in the journal Pediatrics and presented on October 20th at an American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) conference and exhibition in New Orleans.

Biomarine Research Programs at UAB Boosted with BP Oil Spill Funding

marine researchCatastrophe has a way of catalyzing need and resources.  The 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has made University of Alabama (UAB) scientists' expertise in the biomarine environment off their coast particularly valuable.  BP has pledge up to $500 Million to study the effects of the spill, and some of that funding is making its way to biomarine research projects at UA-Birmingham through Alabama's Marine Environmental Science Consortium (MESC) and the larger Gulf Research Initiative Open Research Program.  The MESC has distributed $5 Million in Rapid Response Funds already, and 16 UAB researchers have received $308,344 in grants to fund pilot projects identified by and applied for at the UAB Gulf Oil Spill Summit last fall.
